I was taught HKD techniques as a police officer. I have studied TKD for years and have taught for the last four. I started Combat Hapkido two years ago. Makes a nice gap filler for TKD. TKD is only at striking range, so HKD helps tremendously. I like Combat HKD because it eliminates forms (already got plenty) and goes for pure utilitrian techniques. I also play around with chucks, sword and bo. dwj

    Hello SilverQ,

I know Master Ki very well.

I trained Under Master Ki for almost 20 years. I noticed in your post that you said Master Ki has only been here in calgary for a year and a half. I must correct that for you. I began training with Master Ki in 1982 when his Dojang was on 35th st by Ernest Manning High School. Master Ki moved to the Marda Loop location about 93-94 I think!
Yeah, I was one of the "Old School" guys from way back.
Master Ki was also a Chief Judge and Instructor for the "Green House" which is the Korean Presidential Body Guards.
Glad to see that you are having such a great experience.
Pay attention to what Master Ki is saying and follow what he is showing you closely; His technique is unparralelled. Also, watch the finer movements that Micheal and Robin make while they are training (Especially their feet!). It can really be useful in understanding the dynamics of the kicks and combinations.

    Take care!

Fairly new to Hapkido myself (1.5 years).

I train under KHF 5th Dan Master Wade Langin at Flying Eagle Hapkido. He is trained under the direction of Lee Chang Soo (Kim Myung Yong tree)

    http://www.hapkido-info.net/html/tree_kim__myung-yong.html

The dojang is a pure KHF school (only ones in Canada) and falls under the Jin Jung Kwan style. Master Wade Langin is also the ONLY teaching Hapkido master who is a part of the Hapkido tree. Unlike some other people who claim to be Hapkido Masters.

    Sputnik:
I think you will find many different organizations claiming legitimacy... and if you look through the hapkido tree, you will see lots of offshoots, each one saying they are the "one true source"... I try not to worry too much about it.
My current certification comes from GM Pelligrini through GM In Sun Seo (http://www.hapkido-info.net/html/tree_seo__in-sun.html) through the World Kido Federation which also professes to be an umbrella organization (http://www.kidohae.com/2-3WhyjoinWKF.html). All I can say is that I love the training and the people and don't worry which group(s) I am a member of.

(Actually I have certification (dan level) from the International Hapkido Federation (in Korea), the International Combat Hapkido Federation (in USA), the World Kido Federation (and the Han Min Jok Hapkido Association) in Korea, as well as the Korea Guards Martial Arts Association in Korea.... the names on the certificates really don't mean much, but the good instruction (in my opinion) I received on my way to these pieces of paper does!)

    Hello Everyone!

Well. I'm very new to the group so I guess an introduction is in order!

My name is Ian. I currently reside in Calgary, Alberta, Canada with my wife asnd our two children.

I have trained in the Martial and Combative Arts since the age of three. At age 7yrs I began training in Hapkido, under Kwanjangnim Yoon, Ki. Chul (9Dan under GGM Choi, Yong Sul) of South Korea. This is where I remained for 20 yrs, attaining 2nd Dan under him. Due to unfortunate circumstancs, I severed all ties with Master Ki and after a few years in "Limbo", I signed on with the International Modern Hapkido Federation, where I tested and attained 4th Dan (Sa Dan) and Certified / Appointed Master Instructor. I am also a lifetime member and chartered instructor under the National Korean Martial Arts Association.

Here is a brief synopsis about my background:

    · Trained in the Martial Arts for over 25 years 1978 – Present. Certified 4th Degree (Dan) Black Belt and Certified and Appointed Master Instructor in Hapkido under The International Modern Hapkido Federation under Master Victor Cushing, President and Founder of The IMHF. Trained in Aikido, Tae Kwon Do and Kenjutsu (Japanese Swordsmanship).
    · Lifetime Member and Certified and Registered Master Instructor and Chartered School of The National Korean Martial Arts Association under Grandmaster Rudy Timmerman.
    · Valid Restricted / Non-Restricted Firearms Possession and Acquisition License (PAL). Proficient with Small to Medium Caliber Side-Arms, Shotguns, Sub-Guns, Carbines and Military Small and Long Arms.
    · Certified in Close Protection Operations via Pro-Active Threat Management Systems under Ontario Provincial Police Instructors Paul Bonner, Bill Klim and Des Carter.
    · Certified in Defensive Tactics and Tactical Handcuffing through Edge Defensive Tactics Systems. (Calgary Police Service Instructors Gary Stoney and Ira Macumber).
    · Certified in Conflict De-Escalation and Restraint Techniques through the Canadian Crime Prevention Center (Instructor Barry Davidson).
    · Developer and Chief Instructor of U.C.S. (Urban Combat Simulations), Environmental Adaptation Exercises and Situational Awareness and Patrol Tactics.
    · Specialist in Non-Lethal Defensive Tactics . Blade and Impact Weapon Defenses and Firearms Disarms and Weapon Retention.

Well, I quess that's it for now, hope to hear from y'all soon!!

Hi, I'm a 46 year old father from Denton, Texas who recently started studying the Martial Art of Hapkido. So far I've only had 2 classes but I am very excited. I am studying Hapkido under Chief Instructor Michael Nestor of Power Kicks in Denton, Texas. Power Kicks is a member of the World Taekwondo Federation as well as the Korea Hapkido Federation.

After the first 15 or 20 minutes of warmups and exercises, I feel like I'm about to die and think to my self: "I'm not coming back for this again!" But then we get into various maneuvers and technics and it's fun again. My instructor says after about 2 or 3 weeks, the first 15 minutes will be alot easier. Boy, I can't wait!

I have a 5 year old son who is training in Taekwondo at Power Kicks as well. He has been attending classes for about 3 months now and has earned his yellow belt. Some of the main reasons I joined Hapkido were to build up my stamina, become more flexible and work out some of the stiff joints in my 46 year old body. Oh, and to learn enough to keep my son from kicking my butt when he gets older.

My father who just recently passed away, served in the Air Force from 1957 to 1963 and studied the Martial Art of Akido and was always showing us kids various moves to disable an opponent. When my wife first approached me about entering my son into Taekwondo training, she said the instructor was an ex-police officer that taught Taekwondo and Hapkido, and would take children from 4 years and up. This was the first I ever heard of Hapkido, but it sounded enough like "Akido" that I was okay with it. I'm glad I consented because it led me into taking Hapkido myself, and it gives me and my son something to do together.

I study under Chief Instructor: Michael Nestor. He's an ex-police officer who began taking Taekwondo as a youth and earned his blackbelt at an early age as well. After his parents moved to a new town, he began looking for a new place to train and found a studio that taught Taekwondo and Hapkido. The instructor there agreed to allow him to wear his black belt during training sessions. He began to attend some of the Hapkido classes while there and he said the orange belts were kicking his butt. So off came the black belt and he started wearing a white belt to Hapkido classes from then on. He has since earned his 3rd Dan Black Belt in Hapkido. He is a great martial arts instructor, a great friend, and a great role model. He is truly a man whose conduct proceeds from good will and an acute sense of propriety, who is himself humbled if necessity compels him to humble another, and who appears well in any company. Mike Nestor is a man with whom honor is cherished and virtue is safe. Here are some of his credentials:

3rd Dan Black Belt Instructor Taekwondo
3rd Dan Black Belt Instructor Hapkido
    Certified / Licensed Police Officer
    Certified Law Enforcement Instructor
    Certified Defensive Tactics Instructor
    Certified Firearms Instructor
    Use of Force Consultant
    Abduction Prevention Specialist
    Rape Prevention Specialist
    U. S. Military Close Combat Trainer
US Air Force and Army Veteran - (Desert Storm)
    4 Time U.S. Grand Nationals
1991-1993 Full Contact Competition - Europe

Mister Nestor still actively studies under Grandmaster Yang, Seung Kyu aka - Samuel Yang.
Here are some of his credentials:

7th Dan Black Belt Master Instructor Taekwondo
7th Dan Black Belt Master Instructor Hapkido
4th Dan Black Belt Instructor Yudo (Judo)
3rd Dan Black Belt Instructor Kumdo (Kendo)
1993-1995 US National Taekwondo Demo Team
2 Time World Free Style Sparring Champion
B.A. Degree in Martial Arts Education
    - Yong In University, S. Korea
Action Movie Star - U.S. and Korea

I know at this point I don't know hardly anything about what I'm doing, other than I'm having alot of fun and building up my strength and stamina. I find myself going over each of the new things I learn in class in my head and mentally, as well as physically, practicing them so that I can perfect each one. Any tips, URL's, or specific reading about techniques you folks can offer that you feel would help me, I would greatly appreciate it....Thanks.

    Bobby,

Not to worry, man. I started hapkido 2 years ago myself when I was 38. It was a good 4 or 5 weeks before I wasn't huffing and puffing all the time. Now I find, however, that with careful stretching I can keep up with the young guys and not embarass myself. Keep at it! :)

whip's check in from stratford, CT

hello to all of a rare breed.
I began MA on and off 20 years ago, with a strong emphasis on the internal( philosophy). I started serious training in a really rough college TKD-TSD club, but curiously enough, when I moved back to NYC, could not find a school that felt right. I train at Huang's in Stratford, my home of the past 7 years, and try somehow to fit training into teaching H.S. and father of 3 boys.
I train 3 days a week in very old( pre-olympic) TKD (really TSD), and fit Hapkido in when I can. When I spar in TKD, it is pretty much Hapkido as I will lock and throw someone if they give me the opportunity! (HA!) Hapkido gives me the chance to really go deep into the truth of the MA experience as life. You can't FAKE Hapkido, it works or it does not. Plenty of modern MA are all show and look good in movies( I am REALLY TIRED OF YUEN WO PING!), but hapkido doe not. WHY? because it is STUNNINGLY FAST, POWERFUL, and the opponent does not get the opportunity to reply. NOW< I am NOT Bloodthirsty, BUT Hapkido gives you the CHOICE of immobilizing WITHOUT DAMAGE or UNRECOVERABLE DESTRUCTION. You do not have that choice with a spinning hook to someones' head. It is the perfect marriage of power, grace and compassion.

whip, you make some good points. i said in an earlier post that one of the things i really like about hapkido is that the large number of techniques gives you the capability to escalate your counters based on your attacker's response. you don't have to break a guy's neck because he shoved you by your shoulders. on the other hand, it takes a long time, and lots of practice with resisting partners, to become good enough to use this stuff spontaneously.

i don't know where stratford is, but since you mention nyc, if you'd ever like to visit our school, we're in northeastern nj, about 10-12 miles from the lincoln tunnel. we're always happy to have visitors, especially people who have hapkido experience.

Hi All, New to the forums here. Recieved my BlackBelt through the United States Hapkido Federation under Mr. Don Burns. I have also fought in the Indiana Golden Gloves and trained in MMA, brazillian jiutitsu and Muay Thai. For personal reasons I have not trained in the last few years. I have spent the last year weight training to add some body weight. Now getting ready to get back to training. Can't wait. Glad to have found this site.
