One of our newest members ShadowCat was looking for a welcome thread. But couldn't find it because it doesn't exist.

    So HI EVERYBODY!

Feel free to say hi and introduce yourselves :D

    I'm aikiwolfie and I'm an enigma :p

YAY I get to be the first :D I'd like to say hi. I took my first class of aiki jujutsu last night. It was great. After some helpful exercises and a little rolling we got right to moves. And no kata is nice too. I can't wait for the next class.

edit yeah while I'm posting my mom calls, figures. Saying hold on I have to post something just didn't seem right. Oh well I'm still the first to be welcomed. I feel all tingly lol.

But about the classes and my background. I have no formal training but I've sparred since I was very little. Although all I've really learned from that is how to sparr safely. I can swing any thing full force and stop it without leaving so much as a bruise(I've never tried folded steel and never will, that would be insanely irresponsible no matter how much one practiced b4 hand). But I can't honestly say I know anything as far as ma.

I will admit I feel that I kind of made an ass of myself a little. The instructor asked do you know how to break fall and I stupidity said yes without even asking any question. I figured he'd just have us roll. In a way he did but he did it in a way I've never seen b4. He started the motion for us. That realy threw me off, no pun intended. I screwed up on one, rolling b4 he wanted me too. It was really embarrassing

Hi everybody. :) Since most of the above posters basically just said "hi" in some form or other, I feel a little pretentious writing an intro. :D But anyhoo, I've been practicing Yoshinkan Aikido for about 7 months now, and I'm hoping to test for my yellow belt/10th kyu in April. Besides Aikido I practice Submission Grappling (I've referred to it in earlier posts as BJJ, because a large part of it is Jiu Jitsu, but it's not pure BJJ - it's a mix of BJJ, wrestling and submission wrestling). Other than that, um, yeah, I love martial arts!!! :D

In a world run by players and actors I see nothing wrong with being pretentious. :p Welcome to Aikido. :D

Ok, well...I have about two months experience in Aikikai, about four years experience in Shorin Ryu, and a few years of unofficial Iaido, a few classes of experience in Tian Shan Pai, plus a bits of Hapkido from working with a friend of mine. Any questions?

I guess I'll drop a hello in here as well.

My name is Adam..I've been training in aikido for about ten years in both aikikai (used to be affiliated with Toyoda Sensei's AAA) and Yoshinkan (was an uchideshi). Five years after getting my shodan I am currently getting ready for nidan shinsa...finally. I'm currently training about five or six days a week and travel a lot...in NW Ohio and Chicago. If anyone is interested in coming to one of our schools to work out you're more than welcome.

If anyone knows of a place to train in Gaithersburg, MD please let me know...couldn't find anything on Google and I'm there for a week in April and don't want a weak long break in training before my test.

    Cheers
    A

Depends on how far you are willing to drive.

Yeah, the problem is I'm not sure of my car situation. Last time I went with a buddy and we split a rental...so pretty much I could be like "give me the car, please." This time I'm going by myself and am going to be paired up with someone else who has a rental that I don't know (I'm actually flying into BWI, so I might not even meet up with anyone at the airport but just catch a taxi to Gaithersburg). So it's like a complete stranger asking someone to trust them in a car they are responsible for. Not sure if I can swing it, but I'll try.

Hi everyone, I'm very new to MAP and still fairly new to the world of martial arts. I have a yellow belt in Nihon Goshin Aikido and I'm also strongly considering switching over to Yoshinkan at the same place that Spinmaster trains at.

Nihon Goshin sounds pretty interesting...never heard of it before but just looked it up. Why are you considering switching? What is the Yoshinkan school you wish to attend (in Virginia, is it?).

    Best,
    Adam

My Nihon Goshin (NG hereafter) club changed locations about a year ago and when we did that we lost quite a few students; we were fairly small to begin with. In the process we also lost one of our black belts. Over the past year there has been a slow, steady decline in students. Our sensei also had to take a job very far away and now he only makes it to the dojo for belt promotions. Teaching is up to the two remaining black belts with each of them taking one night per week. They are both good guys but one of them has a teaching style that makes it very hard for me to pick up techniques and principles. I'm not sure how much progress I can make with only a single 1.5 hour session per week.

The attraction of my local Yoshinkan dojo is that they maintain the focus on applicable self-defence that I am accustomed to (no aiki-bunnies) while at the same time keeping some of the more traditional things that we don't have in NG. My NG dojo does no sword work, no bo/jo work, and it doesn't have knee walking. There are probably other things missing as well that I haven't been exposed to yet. NG does do knife defense, gun takeaways, and some ocassional work with a short stick.

The dojo that I am looking at is not directly affiliated with the main Yoshinkan group. I would have to look up the name of the group that they are affiliated with.

It's not Aikido founded by Morihei Ueshiba. But something totally different claiming the same or similar roots.

    Hello all,

    New to the MAP!

I have been practicing aikido since 1982 with a couple of breaks (2.5 years with a baby 20 years ago, and the past two barely practicing due to distance and a nagging injury). Practice aikikai style, USAF.

Roots are with a teacher (Okuyama) studying under Chiba Sensei for many years, but also have roots under teachers studying under Yamada Sensei. Used to be very active going to many seminars throughout the US but have curtailed substantially over the past 5 years or so. Hoping to get back into practice if I can figure out how to practice without hurting myself.

I am located in southern mid-Michigan for any of you MI aikidoka.

    Best, Rachel
