Now that GB is in Jack frost's icy claws of death yet again, and again we're all woefully unprepared, have you got any essential tips, you wish to share? I've got one, I keep a ski jacket and water food in my boot during winter, I was recently stuck in traffic for over two hours, during which I couldn't get into the boot. So if it's cold. Keep in within reach! Over to you!!
A snow shovel ,some snow socks (for tyres) and grit should be in your boot. If you have to drive stick to main roads , even if it's a longer route , and pay close attention to the road ahead , looking for any changes where the snow may have compacted , or later , where black ice will be forming so you can prepare or modify how your driving. And from my youth , handbrake turns and drifting are all lots of fun until you get over confident and bend something
For me it would probably be: More thinking. As I took boot for the... well... boot at your feet For the future some people would obviously do better, if they try to imagine that in winter could be snow. Some people here seem to have forgotten how to drive.
Unfortunately I'm an essential worker, so I morally have to try to get in, I'm all for letting the others take the slack usually, but I think I'm gonna have to go to work! A flask of coffee is going in the car tomorrow morning, snow spade in the back just in case, old laminated nappy cardboard boxes are great for desnowing your car too! Spare shoes and spare clothes as well just in case.
I got a 7am start at work tomorrow, that's got a lot of hills and is 4-5miles away. May wake up at 3am and start hoofing it. Spare socks and change of clothes. Also chocolate. So much chocolate. Maybe a green tea.
Here in the North Eastern US 2 inches of snow today Storm coming on Monday Flurries Wednesday More snow Friday in the 20sF all week, one day will be 30F
We're minus 9 C tonight, and we've been pounded by 8 inches of snow, with more overnight..... Oh my..... (Insert Swannie whistle here)
I have 27 fire stations to visit in the next 3 days, all of which are on the south coast. No additional precautions other than a flask of coffee.
If there on the South Coast, will you need extra eye protection from all the beard oil and manbun bobbles they'll be flying about? You know it's bad when you see a guy from Newcastle with the big coat on......
Cat litter in the boot/trunk....best thing for traction when stuck Also keep blanket, extra woolies etc in a bag in the car
The freezing point of alcohol is much lower than the freezing point of water. Keep some rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle, use it on your windshield when it gets that hard frozen layer of ice on it.
We use methanol for that! Both in the car, and as a squirt gun for when even that isn't working! It seems like having a snow shovel makes me popular with everyone else!
Ya, I don't even know what that means, "icy claws of death." The *low* temperature here is 7-9 C (44-48 F). But, um, I have a scarf in the back of my car, because sometimes the wind is chilly on my neck. Does that count?
