Confined Spaces

What would you do if you were attacked in a confined space? When you think about it, we're in confined spaces all the time... lifts, stairways, areas in work, cupboards. Is it something you train for, or consider when you train? In a confined space, there's less opportunity to move away from your attacker, and in some situations, you couldn't escape at all. Has anyone actually had to defend themselves in a place with little room to manuvoure?

I only began to think about this as a situation the other day, so I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on it

Against a single attacker it would make things more interesting but no more difficult for me, but if there were multiple attackers I would only have to fight them one at a time in a confined space rather than attacks comming from all sides.

Believe it or not, many say that most defense situations actually do happen in a confined space. Ambush in an alley, bar room fight, somebody picking a fight in a bathroom. I wouldn't say to necessarily train for it, but always have a backup plan for different techniques, because if your plan involves getting out of the way of an attack, you need a backup. Either move in on them or whatever else would be best for the situation. I guess we can only train to know how to know what to use that's around us and how to think on our toes.

It's not necessarily a bad thing. To fight someone you have be touching him, making contact with him. You have all your weapons up close. You have less than all your weapons from afar. Thus, fighting up close gives you more weapons = more opportunities.

On the other hand, it's harder to escape from close up. And that is, indeed, a major detriment.

I would have to say that a confined space would make it easier for a somewhat skilled fighter to put down his attacker. You could rush him or wait for him to come to you and wrestle him to the ground. A small space limits an opponents options. Once on the ground, his limbs are at your disposal. Keep in mind, most attackers dont know what theyre in for. You have the element of surprise.

I'd love it if it was a one-on-one attack in a confined space, the grappling range is like a second home to me.

you may have less room to move around, but remember, he also has no room to escape :D swift kick to the groin would be my prefered defense :D

I think I'd do what Cain did. But what if the guy's the size of a tank? Not much luck clinching him then.

A groin kick may not be as effective as you would imagine, talking from experience. It has to be very well placed and jeans tend to absorb alot of the blow and then there's the adrenelin.......A knee to the groin also requires good placement and a wind up to deliver enough power to drop him. While you're winding up you need to be close, so this maybe more of a finishing technique than an initial counter.

My personal defence would be to spot the exit and get through it asap!!!
Failing that a scrap. Using strikes against vunerable points, eyes, throat, etc.
Against multiple attackers? I would probably get beaten to a pulp!! Although if I was aware that trouble may have been brewing I would avoid the enclosed area/s. i.e I would endevour to not make myself vunerable for attack.

I'm getting worried by some of the answers people are giving. It goes to show how different situations are in the street compared to a dojo.

It depends on the situation but if it was a one-on-one I'd do anything I could to get out. Grab an ear and pull it off, fish hook, poke the eyes, grab the cheek and tear. Just pull him to the ground by the meaty parts of his face and get out. I wouldn't be swinging if there isn't room to swing. If there is more than one person then you're in big trouble. You've got nowhere to go so you're just gonna get overpowered. I'd go for eyes, throat, anything to make some space for my escape. If that fails, curl up into a ball and take my kicking.

Being caught in a confined space is much worse than being out in the open.

I got caught in the ladies room in high school, many years ago, by 3 other girls. At the time we were having race riots Need I say more? 2 had grabbed my arms and had me pinned up aginst the wall. The 3rd was coming at me. I remember picking up both my legs and kicking #3 across the room. Then I lost it. I had an adrenalin rush and the other two got flung across the romm too. I left the area and went back to class. About 20 minutes later they were escorting me to the office to be suspended for fighting. I remember my father walking in in his police uniform and demanding how I could be suspended for self defense against 3 girls, Witnesses in the bathroom were to afraid to step forward. Now my dad had taught my brother and I fighting and wrestling since we were babies. I wasn't suspended and neither were the other girls.
I truly belive that even with the training I have now, I perhaps may assess the situation more, and react with what ever weapon that happens to be instinctive. Like legs, fists, head, elbow ect. as quick as I could and then get out of there asap.
