Man what a gem this is:

check out the footage of them training. Good stuff for those of you into bodyweight and traditional type workouts!

Love those big ass oak shields they train with... man what a rotational core workout!!!

A bit later check out those massive clubs they're swinging! Wonder what sorts of weight they are doing? Killer!

ok because of what gets posted these days... this stuff pops up more and more. Some of it is just brilliant. I've spent years looking for info on these types of sports/conditioning methods and much of it until just recently was very hard to find!

This is an interesting one... sort of like the Persian version of the old time circus strongmen! Diggin' it. Check out the size of the clubs he wields. His message is a good one as well.

Here are two more... again more good looks at some of the training implements - at 0:20 of this vid you can see the basic implements which appear to be:

    1) the clubs (at 6:57 watch the little kids get in on the action with small clubs)
    2) the shields
    3) the push up board (check out it's usage at 6:00 minutes of the clip!!)
    4) the bell
    5) the bid weird metal bow thingy with symbols on it (check it out at 8:47 of the clip - wonder what it weighs)

and here's another one with these MASSIVE clubs... I need to find some info on the weights and how their weight system goes for clubs like this:

Here is some competition for the heavy shields:

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mu-MlKJefVI&feature=related"]Ali Farzaneh lifting heavy shields - YouTube[/ame]

Here are two comments off YouTube which if accurate shed some light on the weights and reps that we are looking at:

There is a fairly interesting conversation about the weight and awkwardness on this YouTube video... pointing out that more than just the sheer weight of the items is the balance point and the awkward nature of them making them much much harder than a dumbbell of the same weight.

Also worth noting (and it's touched on in the comments on YouTube...) is these conditioning methods pre-date Islam in Iran... and they were forbidden for a time after Islam took hold. So it's something that is very deeply rooted in the traditions of the Persian people (who if I recall original and predominate religion wasn't Islam but Zoroastrianism... good info to get these days lest we believe what the media would have us believe that all Iranians are terrorists muslims hell bent on nuclear destruction.

But I digress... lol... let's keep the thread down to conditioning issues. :)

Youtube will go down as one of mankind's greatest inventions.
As well as all the rubbish clips it's actually becoming a repository for some really interesting and hard to find knowledge (like here). Stuff we just wouldn't have easy access to. Stuff that is easily lost or forgotten.

Absolutely agreed. It's this type of esoteric physical culture stuff along (and for me rare blues/jazz/motown music footage and songs) that make it an amazing resource.
Yes there is tons of stupid crap on it as well but with a bit of lateral thinking and some searching... it truly has some great benefits for those interested in physical culture. I find it good for those looking for ways to break up routines and add variety to workouts. And simply see how someone else in a totally different part of the world in a totally different culture gets it done!!!

I'm definitely one of those interested in bodyweight stuff. Nice find, slip, though not as good as the Turkish Oil Wrestling stuff you used to post ages ago (just kidding). The clubbells in the second video were quite intimidating! I have friend who is half Persian and I'll pass these along to him--he'll get a kick out of it. Thanks for posting.

    Here is another...

this appears to be quite a good documentary from Germany. Maybe if I look long enough I can find it with English subtitles?

At any rate... some good stuff in here... check out the Persian version of the Burpee at 6:23 of the video.

A bit worth noting out of the comments was this:

lol... yeah can't lie... getting the Christmas goose by gnarly oiled up Turks isn't really that appealing. :p

Yeah the price on 'clubbells' is entirely stupid. Just ridiculous... I bet these clubs don't cost that much at all. What more interesting is the clubbells in a sense are totally separated from all the culture and tradition of what's being used here. I think it's important to keep the tradition to a certain extent. Not that I expect there to be any mad run to open up 'House of Strength' in strip malls across America... but it's pretty cool stuff none the less. :)

OK! Here we go a doco about Zoorkhaneh in English! Good stuff!

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pE0ha30_70&feature=related"]Zoorkhaneh House of Strength - YouTube[/ame]

OK... that is a pretty good into into the history and training tools of Zoorkhaneh... as well as the ethos and mentality behind it.
I think that pretty much fits in well with what most would consider 'warrior ideals' or what many people are keen to learn or take with them
from their martial arts training. Fascinating stuff and it's centuries old.

It's interesting that in many of these videos we guys that are quite a bit older... but still strong and agile. Impressive. Those heavy shields look unwieldy and hard as.

When they throw those clubs up in the air... man.... talk about a total mood kill if you dropped it?! hahaha... or caught your training partners or your foot?
I bet those buff old dudes are not going to be impressed that you just made a hole in their floor by dropping that club after not catching it!!! :p

Nice photos of wrestling tourney in countryside. These guys look tough. The throws look similar to some type of Judo techniques:

Yeah, Slip, I hear you on the divorcing the cultural context away from some of the things people do in order to enjoy a particular fad for a brief season. Always nice to see some context. I know that I do enjoy a lot of the cultural contexts surrounding the MA that I practice, for instance, and have cringed at YouTube clips of Bally's 'capoeira' classes.

Thanks for posting up so much stuff. I'll have to check out the other videos tomorrow.
