http://www.angelfire.com/ny5/shenandoah/OBB/OBB.html would those exercise help for sparring or will they just make a person become big and bulky?
These "Zen" exercises as described are isotonic/isometric in nature and a good workout to focus on building muscle strength and not so much muscle 'growth' ... (but I may be wrong ) .... I'm thinking by adding weight to these exercise would increase muscle size.
No exercise will make you big. Size comes from calories. Muscles really only know tension. They can't the difference between external loads (weights), body weight resistance, or Isometric holds. Isometrics are excellent for developing strength. However, they only show strength improvement with in 10-15 degrees of the hold/press. So, if you were trying to develop punching strength then you would want to choose 3-4 positions of the punch from the chamber to 75-85% of full extension and hold in each position. This should provide strength improvements thru out the full punching motion.
