    Hey guys,

    Iv got a question.

My girlfriend just recently started TKD, been training around 5 months.

But she came across one of those egotistical (SP)? people that likes to prey on the in experienced to make themselves feel better,

She took a full power back kick to the stomach and was severley winded, now the problem is ever since then just the slightest tap/hit will fold her over, winding her.

She didnt have this problem before, i could spar at quite a descent contact level with her, also it's been around four months since it happend.

Any ideas as to whats wrong and/or how to heal??

Everytime I go to the doctor with an injury, he tells me that I shouldn't do such a dangerous "sport". Then he goes off to be the sideline physician at a Football game!

Actually, she should go see a physician. Is it just being "kick shy", does she just get out of breath or does it hurt a good deal too? Sounds to me like she has something bruised... like her Diaphram perhaps. More than likely she's OK, just needs time to heal, but it never hurts to get a medical opinion - not just us goofs online:wow:

Here's hoping she feels better soon.

I have a deviated septum and have never been able to breathe through one side of my nose as a result.

I went to see a specialist a while ago and he basically said, "Your hobbies are martial arts and high speed motorcycles. Sooner or later we're going to be putting your face back together, one way or another. We'll save the NHS some money and deal with it then."

Sounded pretty sensible to me tbh.

My wife got beaten up by her horse a few years back, smashing her nose pretty bad, she thinks the same way as you. Sooner or later it's going to get popped in training so it'll be fixed then.

Hey thanks for the replies, sorry for my late reply ,my internet was down for a couple weeks.

Um no, i dont believe she is "kick shy" every time she gets a knock there, it does actually fold her over and bring tears to her eyes.

its quite bad , i mean last time we sparred i quickly snapped out a dollyo chagi, no pwer/impact behind it at all, just a little checky " i got you!" and wham she foled over clutcing her solar plexus.

That initial kick she took has damaged somthing, just wondering if i will heal over time, or wether it needs special attention...

Waiting four months to ask a bunch of people on a forum what to do after this became apparent is plain stupid.

    Get to a doctor.
If your doctor does not fix it go to another.

I know it sounds silly but maybe its a psychological thing. I have been winded/damaged a few times in my lower ribs on the right. Nowadays it takes barely anything to double me up when I take a blow to that side or someone puts their weight on it when grappling. It tends to hurt a fair bit (I got it checked and it was bruised not broken) but I tend to be really nervous on that side.

My God - you need to take her to a doctor right now.

I cringe when i hear of this kind of thing. When my wife was pregnant, many, many years ago, we thought she'd be ok training, and this imbecile - me - thought she'd be ok holding a pad, and this other imbecile missed the pad by a mile and just narrowly missed her stomach.

It's these moments where our intelligence takes a sudden leap of realisation of how stupid we were before. Aya!

Makes me shudder just to think.

Yeah, if there is nothing wrong physically, it could be as Su Lin says. There is a concept/idea called "fear reactivity" its basically a subconscious reflex from a previously unpleasant encounter. The mind can affect certain muscles that were previously affected in an unpleasant encounter, making them more tense and easily affected by various stimulus.. i.e. punch, thought, etc..

Scott Sonnon had a load of material on this, maybe worth a google..

Ooh thanks for that- may look into it as it's starting to affect my training these days!

No worries, hope you find something useful. Just thought I would put a shameless plug in for internal martial arts since they (providing you have a good teacher) will address these sorts of issues too. I'm guessing something like Systema would also, RobP might be able to expand on that. Good luck! :)

I've hit a guy 5 months ago at CLOSE range with a punch and not very hard.
But sometimes I'll catch him talking about it to his friends and he complains that it still hurts.
I can't understand why,it was in the solar plexus and didn't even touch his rib cage. Very weird.
It sounds alike to her injury, and it can be dangerous.Mainly because you don't have X-ray eyes and can't see if it is a broken rib or maybe a injured abdominal muscle. But not to scare you,you need to have her looked at.
Just in case it maybe caused by slight internal organ sensitivity.
Ever been hit in the liver full force? Let's just say you don't jump up all happy and ask for another one. It hurts!
But just be safe, and get her the best of help!

P.S.- Tell her to get well soon!
