Which first...weights or TKD ?

If you have an hour to an hour and a half to train, and want to include both TKD practice and weights session, which would you do first and why?

Is it a matter of preference or proven method?

    Input would be appreciated.

    Thanks :)

    I'd do the TKD first.

I like to rest after a heavy weight session, it really drains my energy and slows me down. Also a risk of pulled muscles, say if you've been doing squats or deadlift before some more acrobatic movements...

I'd work the weights on your day off from TKD. Sparing really drains my energy and reduces the maximum weight I can use, which is bad.

You may be better asking this on the Health and Fitness Forum.

Is there not an idea that doing cardio after weights reduces the gains from the weights session? I may be completely wrong, but I thought I'd read something to that effect.

You could use the first half hour as a warm-up using TKD techniques and running through patterns. Concentrating on technique rather than power should get you warm without being knackered, then move on to weights.

i'd separate weight training from TKD training, but i'll move this thread to Health because there I'm sure you'll get more response.

Id do it on another separate day as well. If you do them on the same day, you will most likely end up sacrificing gains from one or the other.

i do weights when i get back from work, then after post workout shake and meal i have an hour before taekwondo class.

fits in with my life and i'm having no problems with putting on the muscle mass.

ideally i'd do workouts on different days to TKD but life is never that easy :D

If it's just "practice" like messing around and shadow boxing or working on katas, then I'd say do it before as almost like a warm up.

Generally, I try to do them on separate days though. If not, I do weights a few hours before TKD and follow up my weight training with a nice hearty PWO shake or two. Many hours before TKD though...so I don't have to see that shake again...;)

If I could, separate the two totally, different days. TKD before weights ideally.

My problem is mainly time at the moment, and trying to squeeze everything in. I just find I'm knackered which ever way I do it, before I start the next.

I need to win Lotto and not fit work into the mix :D

For safety sake, I would go with either several hours time between the two or do the tkd first.

bump^^ What TKD said! I too work, hit the gym for one hour, then have a TKD class for an hour to hour and a half; 2 times a week. My only rule is that I NEVER do legs when I have a TKD class. I did that once and I had sparring. I could not move, kick, or defend. I took a beating that I do not want to repeat. It gave me a whole new appreciation for endurance training though. :D

Ok, I'll be the contrarian. :D

FWIW, I read in a fairly recent issue of Men's Health that you should do lifting before cardio, if your goal is to lose weight. (As I'm still trying to drop 10 pounds that's the method I use, lift for 30-40 minutes and then run for 30).

I'm assuming that your TKD practise is fairly cardio intensive, (I know mine is), so I'd say if that's what your trying to do, cut weight, then the lift first TKD second approach would be in line with the report in Men's Health.

Things often work better in theory than practice, I wouldn't fancy running after a heavy squating session, or even less after deadlifting were my back is too stiff.

Maybe best to see which your body responds best to!

The problem is that if you do a lot of kicking, your muscles may be too tired to properly do your kicks increasing the chance that you will ruin your form or worse, do the technique incorrectly such that you injure yourself.

Much more embarassing; FALLING OVER! Yep, been there, done that. Kicked once and did not have the quad strength to hold myself up. Right on my ****! :D

Especially as we get older. It is hugely embarrassing to be the biggest and oldest in class and fall flat on your butt.

And I am the oldest and, the biggest. My instructor is 6'4" and weighs 170. I am 5'10 @ 180!
