one of my friends can put his fingers straight and move only the very tip of a finger at will. the problem is, sometimes when he tries to bend his fingers, the knuckle closest the tip will bend and lock while the rest of the finger is still unbent and stuck that way. does anyone know what how this works (as i know i couldn't do it if i wanted to) and how this involuntary bending of the tip and locking could be prevented

I can do it with a couple of fingers but not all, although I have seen people do it with all their fingers. I suspect it's a motor skill that could be learned by most people through practice.

My little finger sometimes locks out on a stretch when playing guitar, I think it's just practice and being able to relax a bit more than will help.
