ok when i was younger i had a hot temper and at least of couple of times i punched a wall. really really hard. now the ring finger knuckle on my right hand is messed up.

its softer to the touch and more rounded than my other knuckles. my other knuckles are hard and pointy when i make a fist, even my left ring finger knuckle. but this one is round and soft, also when i kendo or just randomly hit it on accident it hurts very much. it doenst hurt all the time just after impact of some sort and it hurts more than it should after being hit.

    my questions
1/what is wrong with my hand
2/what can i do to correct it
3/do i have to stop kendo or martial arts all together

thank you all very much for your help

I'd say glove up with some good grappling gloves.

    My answers :D

    1) Sounds like the cap's been knocked off .. but see answer 2.

    2) See someone who is a professional..... i.e. a doctor

    3) Unknown (see answer 2) any misguided prognosis from a website forum may not be able to catch long-term damage.

Let's face it, is leaving it worth the risk?

My advice, make an appointment. :D physio or otherwise :D

EDIT: Whoops just noticed this is in Trad Healing... soz if doctor suggestion already thought of/ tried.

From your brief description? I'd say you've buggered it. Beyond that its difficult to be specific.

Probably nothing, the damage is done. You may be able to prevent it deteriorating further though.

I very much doubt that. Does training aggravate the injury? If not, why stop? If it does aggravate it, find a way to train that doesn't aggravate it.

You need to get some medical advice. Whilst repair is unlikely, doctors and/or traditional therapists might be able to suggest some things to help, for example supplements that are good for the joints.

Seek medical advice. It sounds like one of mine which the physio has said is suffering from tendon damage.

Find a way to train without hitting it - you shouldn't be hitting it if you are punching properly anyway as you should be hitting with the first 2 knuckles of your fist.

I've done that, I remember exactly what happened.
We were all playing indoor soccer, I had stolen the ball, gotten passed the goalie, and it was the easiest shot at goals ever.
I kicked the ball (Toe bashed would be a better word)and the ball flew over the top of the net and hit the wall behind it.
I blew the best play ever.
I've raised my elbow, dropped to one knee and punched the ground as hard as I could.
I was wearing gloves, and I punched hard enough to cause the stitching in the gloves to imbed into my knuckles. And make a noise loud enough to make people who were looking the other way jump.

I took of the glove, and basically thought, "Ow! @#$! @#%@@&! Ok, knuckle very sore! I deserve that, knuckle bleeding....that's just odd. Meh, I'll be ok"

I was fine a few hours after, but for ages since I hit it, I couldn't make a fist without it hurting, the knuckle had grow a massive amount, I thought it was just swelling at first, but then I felt the bone :p

Later on, I went to see a physio, not for my knuckle mind you, but she asked "Do you do boxing as part of your training?"
I replied with something to the affect of "No, but I do, do a lot of punching."
After a short conversation, she pointed out that there might be joint damage that would give me a higher change of arthritis later in life and she suggested that I get some shark cartridge to help heal the joint. Which helped.

Thus, I recommend you go see a professional about this, as they'll almost always find the problem, and then a solution.
So go find a physio, or your GP who will then send you to a specialist.
It may not appear serious, but I can assure you, it will be.

    Stop everything.

Get a doctor to see it immediately before continuing with any other training.

Next time - if you plan to hit something, get it wrapped and put on a good pair of gloves and go jogging!!!! One hour outside in the park will do you good. :)

I've hit a mirror before - shattered it straight through to a brick wall. Took me months for the hand to heal. Learnt my lesson the first time around! :D

i've done this to my middle knuckle - took about 2 months for it to get better, but mine hardened up, so it's probably calcified, but if you did yours ages ago and it is still soft, you should see a doctor or something - get a steel cap put in - wouldn't that be useful if you get into a scrap...?

-hwarang- You can get steel caps for you knuckles? Gosh I'd better go bust up all my knuckles. All seriousness though... Is that a real procedure?

-yangtaichi- I've done something similar to my right hand middle knuckle. Just being young and hot headed I've punched more than my fair share of things that were harder than my fist was. I would reccomend seing a Doctor as I doubt we could give you a proper diagnosis. I've had my hand X-Rayed but came up fine. Check with your doc. but I would look into getting a Makiwara board. Start with something that isn't too hard and work your way up. It's supposed to make your bones and everything harder and more sutible for impact if you do it right.
