Hey guys, I m new to this forum.

I'm a 18 year old high school student in Australia. I was looking forward to learn one of these arts. I get into fights very easily and regularly, so I want to learn something which doesn't take that long. I want to learn martial arts purely for self-defence and want to be confident when I walk without any fear.

    My preferences -

    1. Jeet Kune Do - I was inspired by Bruce Lee, but I heard it takes a lot of time to master it.
    2. Krav Maga - It is the best hand-to-hand combat system and is easier to learn in short amount of time.
    3. Filiplino Kali - This is my 2nd Favorite as I was inspired by Bourne Movies, but I heard it focuses more on weapon training.
    4. Muay Thai - Inspired by Tony Jaa.

So, which one should I go for? I want to fight multiple attackers, and definitely wanna go for weapon training as well.

Sorry for the big post, but I like to make things clear by writing in detail.

I think you need to reevaluate the reasons you want to get into the martial arts.. An attitude like that is going to be a detriment in any instructor who you go to and give the reasons you want to train as outlined above.. I know if you came to my school, I would introduce you to the way out by telling you that you are in the wrong school and want to train for the wrong reasons.

Well, I'm trying to be as real as possible. I don't want to fake anything, so I'm being honest here. I don't want to learn martial arts because I wanna act tough and bully people, but I want to learn it for "self-defence". Another big reason is I want to be totally fit and in good shape, also it's fun learning a new art. My thread may be direct and aggressive, but I'm telling the truth. I don't get into fights randomly, but the reason I mentioned the 2 things because I want to prevent getting into trouble.

I'll revise question so that it's appropriate.

Well, my question is which one would you recommend? I just need 1 word answer, would be good if explained in brief or even detail.

I don't want no dramas here, just answer - straight to the point.

I think one of the reasons we are asking all these questions is to better understand our current situation (ex, Hannibals question). We don't have a martial art template that fits every single person, to the point. When picking a martial art, it's usually case by case. You can narrow down your search by posting info, and the more info (not personal mind you) the easier it is to make suggestions. Also, every school and the art they teach is different, and you may actually enjoy a school you wouldn't have expected to enjoy.

Also, weapon disarms for the most part are desperation techniques, and should only be committed when every, and I mean every, other option is exhausted. In terms of multiple attackers, one is manageable, two is hard, three is beyond difficult, and four, well, wishful thinking. When dealing with multiple attackers, they won't stand and go one at a time, they'll all swarm you.

The question still stands, why do you get into fights so often? The fact you are unwilling to answer it - or even understand why we are asking it - shows that physical skills are not what you need

Fair enough, thanks for the suggestion. But lets come to the actual answer - you reckon I should go for krav maga or kali? I mean JKD/Muay Thai would take sometime, just figured out so that I can probably learn later. For now, I should go either for KM or Kali. What do you reckon?

Well, fights do happen, not a big deal. I have short temperament so I get into arguments really quickly which goes physical depending on the person, nothing serious here. I am strong enough to handle 1 person at 1 time considering I got a good experience in high school. :D

But, I want to learn martial arts because it will make me look more confident, I can end the fight quickly and I can deal with 2 or more attackers at the same time. And, it will also keep me fit and in good shape.

    YAWN !!!!!!!!

I didn't quite get your opinion about multiple attackers and Muay Thai.. You said that Muay Thai is excellent for one on one or one on two fights but generally lacks on multiple attackers fighting, but yet above you also said that when it comes to multiple fights you can only handle at best 2 attackers, maybe 3..
So if that's the case I can't see why Muay Thai lacks in the multiple opponents front, since it can take you as far as you can go in this kind of situations..

Work on your temprament first and foremost and you will avoid 99% of fights.

Until you meet the wrong guy of course

    possibly

    hopefully

Absolutely not - your expectations show a level of immaturity or ignorance

Now THAT is a good reason - I suggest Muay Thai in that case

It will take long time, I wanna do as quick as possible. I'll probably learn that after few years. So, KM or Kali? What do you reckon?

Hmm, go take Ameri-Do-Te, if you can find it. Probably one of the best systems I know so far. The main focus of the art is to properly defend yourself, and they obviously include weapon disarms and multiple attacker drills, which suits your taste. They also do some moderate conditioning, probably comparable to Mauy Thai. Most schools will also offer free rape prevention classes. Finally, Ameri-Do-Te, from my knowledge, is a hybrid art, and has taken the best from most martial arts, so that's a nice added bonus. I wouldn't bother with TKD or Aikido though. Stay away from those. Those arts will do nothing to benefit you. Ameri-Do-Te is the way to go. I hope that helps answer your question.

Hmmmm regarding krav in my inept ( and yes i mean it is just about worthless) I had heard that the majority of Krav maga classes are not the actual art , but basic self defence classes that jumped on the "Krav maga is military used and thus the best" band wagon. There are a few who teach the actual thing but are few and far between apparently.

My uncle is a magistrate and through some strange events had an Israeli soldier round to his for dinner, I was present and asked him about krav maga, and finding a good school. He said basicly what i mentioned above. Apparently a good indicator if the class is the real deal, is if the class spars full contact regularly. Apparently that is a big part of the way it is taught in Israel as they say they want you to use it under pressure.

But from what i have seen it looks like updated combatives. SImple easy to pull off moves that hurt if they hit right.

    Seventh - I can't find Ameri-Do-Te in Australia, bruv.

robin101 - So, you won't suggest taking Krav? That leaves me only Kali.
