I'd like to read up more on the history of Europe. Anything really, not limiting myself to a particular time period. Anyone got any good recommendations?? Thanks!
The rise of modern warfare by H. W. Koch is quite a good overview of the early modern period, although it is very much concerned with conflict, at the title indicates.
Th Cold War. Pretty good, and generally had good reviews. The authorised history of MI5 is alright too (as far as I've read anyway).
Through a Mirror Darkly, by Barbara Tuchmann IIRC. A study of one of France's finest knights, who was still in the front lines on foot at the age of 60. A must-read for students of medieval Europe.
With a title like that you might want to tell us the author. I am sure there are one or two books with similar names.
Indeed, here's one by one of my students http://www.amazon.co.uk/Harold-Wils...qid=1436343050&sr=8-2&keywords=geraint+hughes
Starkey wrote excellent work on the Tudors - well worth seeking out any of them. My old history teacher - Nicholas Henshall - wrote this one "Myth of Absolutism. Change and Continuity in Early Modern European Monarchy" It can get a bet heavy, but is worth sticking with
I think penguin does a book called "Icelandic Sagas" Largely they are accounts of the early settlement period in Iceland and all deal with the law and government in civil disputes as well as the political climate of the rest of Europe.
This, read this, but also look for a copy of Njals saga, which isn't in the book, seriously, one of the best books I've ever read.

Those without good taste you mean......next thing you will be telling me you don't like Yorkshire caviar
I am enough of a subject of the queen to love a good pie when i get the opportunity, so such sacrilege i would never utter.
