I'm currently taking Muay Thai and am thinking of taking another martial art for some more close range/grappling techniques. IMy friend wants me to take Aikido with him (which I'm interested in learning) but I believe it may come into conflict with my Muay Thai training. What do you guys think?
Try Rico's Vale Tudo class over at RAW gym in El Segundo - you'd love it I'm sure - and it will fit right in with your Muay Thai.
Yes, it probably would conflict. Mixing the two is certainly not impossible, but mixing BJJ or catch wrestling or some such grappling sport/art with thai boxing is much easier. If you try aikido, do keep in mind that the learning curve for muay thai is significantly shorter, because it's techniques are significantly simpler.
Thanks YODA I'll look into it, though I think it may be a bit too far from me. The gym I go to is only about a seven minute drive from me (in freeway) and it also teaches Braga Jiu Jitsu, so I might end up taking it there. There's also a much closer in Koreatown that teaches Judo/Jiu Jitsu that my friend and I are going to check out tommorow. Thanks for all the help aikiMac. I know Aikido takes alot of patience, but I'd be willing to ut up with it. I just want some options on defending myself. I currently don't know how I would physicls defend myself against someone who I don't want to hurt. Plus, I like the idea of being trained to take on Multiple attackers.
Odd Mix Could work though Aikido and MT - would need some practicing as MT is a hard style and big on fitness and str/power yet Aikido is not. Could work very well thought if you invest the time to blend the two together. Good luck
