Man I'm not so sure about some of those knife defence clips.. It just seemed odd in the first one the knife hand is left unattended for a bit. Maybe the angle was all wrong camera wise, but it just looked like a gimme stab to the face.

    Just my .02 :)

Hey.. I'm just saying the angle I saw it from didn't look right, so I pointed out it looked a bit odd.. ya'll will have to forgive me.. I'm extremely skeptical about most knife defences I'm shown.. I've seen so many and very few have I incorporated into my toolbox. Its just my experience its one thing to learn a technique but quite another when someone pulls a pig sticker with intent to open a new breathing hole on you.

I'd love to try and train a few of the ones shown though.. I'll never turn down learning something new, its just a matter of will I want to refine it and absorb it?

errr... i dont think playing slap fu with knifes at that range and speed is a good idea... if that was real life and he handled the situation like that id put my money on the knife guy lol

You haven't felt either of these guys "slap"
And I would guess that there is more going there than some happy slapping.

see Zendogs responce ... this is seriously been there done that.

you are welcome to come to a class or whatever and see how well the principles of Check, move and hit work.

Also you can see at the end of this clip .. completely unrehearsed attacks and defences using the same principles.

    all the best.

are you talking about the bit in that clip where i am showing how easy it is to be sliced to bits with a knife by staying in a certain range by the way? the bit where i am cutting really fast and he is tryingh to defend?

just out of interest ... cause thats not any sort of a defence that is a bit showing what not to do .....

    cheers

Hi chris, I think he must be. i just watched the clip Angelus linked and the only thing that looked 'slap fu' was that bit. Maybe he didn't see that you were holding the knife and doing the 'slapping' as the guy was being theoretically cut to pieces.

    regards

Hey.. wasn't popping at you dude. Thing with this work and IMA is its principle based. Put techniques farthest from your mind really.. Train them sure, but put them a firm second to the principles Chris mentioned. Sound as a pound for this stuff imho.

sure he blocked 10 but he still got hit once.... he'd still be dead. Knife defence has to be practical and simplified. Thats why i personally think shotokan is so effective against knives.

Shotokan is not even practical against empty hand, giving the other guy a knife dont make you any better :D

. I think that knife self defense in general leaves a lot to be desired, but the clips here (against blades) was as good as any I have seen.

I liked the Taiji apps, but the knife defense seems kind of convoluted. I think if you're going to do a knife defense it's best to try something short and sweet. But my favorite knife defense is still RUN! Or if that's not possible, pick up a chair or something. Even if you're good, bare hands against knife is just so dangerous.

Of course shotokan makes up a major part of most military stand-up self defence regimes for no reason right?

Being a Tai Chi guy i wouldnt expect you to be pro-shotokan, but shotokan is practical and easy to learn. I also have my own problems with shotokan because alot of what i do contradicts shotokan, but when it comes to knife defence it works best with least training.

LOL but i like Bas Rutten's stuff lol :D

Well it wouldnt make sense for shotokan to still be around if all the people practising it got beat up in fights now would it. No art can survive if it is not effective. Many people bomb on CMA's saying "it has all the icing but not the cake to put it on". Now if CMA's werent effective, thery wouldnt be around either. Besides Bruce Lee trained in shotokan...he found it effective and applied it to JKD. Im not saying Bruce's words and actions are infallible but they do have a lot of weight.

Interesting. The only issue I have with your logic is that the martial art has little to do with real world application. It does make a difference but it is a distant third behind experience and mental attitude.

When something works well it is usually because of experience and mental attitude (strong character), not because of training.

It just so happens that people with experience and good mental attitude come to realize the importance of training and they tailor their training to match what they believe is of benefit to them.

What I'm saying is that those karateka in shotokan that were bad asses had strong character and knowledgable real world experience to give them the advantage, the training in karate helped but not as much as the other two factors. You cannot say reasonably that it was their training in karate alone that made them who they were.
