Hilary Mantel's getting a lot of publicity at the moment because of her many awards, her controversial comments about the press' treatment of royal women and the success of Bringing Up The Bodies. I read Wolf Hall a couple of months ago and really enjoyed it. I thought it was an absorbing read, did a great job of fleshing out characters that usually get a two dimensional treatment in the history books and making you care about people who are usually just representatives of a particular political stance. However, it didn't amaze me. I thought it was "a good book", but also that I've read better. Has anyone else read it? Do you think it, and Bringing Up The Bodies, are worth the huge amounts of praise and excitement?
