Hi everyone, I'm thinking about where I want to go with my martial arts and one of the things is I would like to be able to delivery a decent self defence class, possibly focused on womens self defence. But where would I start with being able to decide on what to teach, including what physical and non-physical interventions, avoidance and general tips. So it would be developing at first some kind of syllabus or course. The trouble is I have not done this before and don’t really know where to start. I wouldn’t have a problem simply teaching the main system of martial arts I am trained in, but I don’t really want it to be that despite it being a self defence focused. I’ve already read a lot of the self defence material, been to a number of courses and have personal experience as a bouncer but this is certainly a big step. I’d appreciate any feedback on this and I don’t mind if anyone suggests I access more resources and gain more experience before proceeding.
Hello, I have designed and taught womens self defense courses. Send me an email, and I'll dig out the lesson plans for you. Have you done much Adrenal Stress training?
righty, what is your current level of understanding when it comes to things like avoidance? For example do you approach your car with your keys in your hand, or do you stop at the car and search your bag? There are some real basic things you can do that should be habits, rather than nervous actions.
This is something I have been toying with lately. Things I would certainly want to see included in a self defense program (from a learners point of view) would be: Avoidance Awareness training How the law effrects self defense (Criminal Law Act 1967 s.3(1) and Common Law) Practical hands on techniques Defense against an armed attacked Defense against an attack from the rear (and exactly what that term means) That's just a drop in the ocean as far as self defence teaching is concerned in my eyes
You have worked as a bouncer?! Oh you've got to share some stories on that. Did you get a chance to use your BJJ at work?
Yeah. It's not really as interesting as people make out. But I do have to say my JuJutsu was far more valuable in this than BJJ. I still have to get around to messaging the people I need to message. Gah, thinking and getting my thoughts together takes too much time.
I use the target acronym from PFS/JKDAA to really simplify it. Each letter is a target - hit it however you can Escape To Gain Safety E-yes T-hroat G-roin S-hin Hit one of these, get the hell out of Dodge
