I have study in Genbukan for the last 2 years (even though college keep getting in the way, therefore I am only Go Kyu level). In Genbukan we teach very traditional Ninpo, the same way it was taught for centuries. One of the item we do is the element katas. Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, and Void. I find these very important, not as fighting techniques, but as a feeling during a fight, I know Kung fu uses animals styles for the same effect. What your guys opinion on the traditional Ninpo elements?
Yes I think the five elements has way more to do with the mental side of training. I always thought of it as becoming an element depending on the situation, in a manner of speaking. Even in some of the techniques we do the elements reflect upon them.
