What is the average shinai size everyone uses here? I just picked up a 39 (it was all they had) is this to large?

It's mostly about personal preference. I have a 42" and a 39". Like 'em both. Use 'em both.

I've got a 39. I'm a tall guy, though, so it doesn't bug me at all. I would like to try something longer though, to get the feel.

I've got a 38, and it's the longest in my class (mostly 37's and 36's). Kurohana, I didn't know they went up to 42.

Specially made for a tall guy who then decided he didn't want to buy it. So I did.

Isn't it supposed to be the length of your arm from tip to handguard?

I read once that is was the length from armpit to tip of middle finger plus heel of palm to tip of middle finger. Can anyone verify that? Personally, I practice with what ever I can find, regardless of length. IF you ever have to use a weapon, you may not get that chance to pick an ideal length, so practice with what you can. Get several weapons in various lengths and materials.
