Hi guys! I'm currently looking to get back into martial arts again. If I just throw out some ideas about what I'm looking for, it would be lovely to receive some feedback. I like Thai-boxing style standup, but would also like to learn to round that off by utilising palm-strikes, finger-strikes, etc. I would like to learn stand-up locks, throws, and chokes, and would be willing to learn groundfighting - though I have no real love for it, so I don't want something orientated around it. I'd want to be able to deal with somethiing as quickly as possible on the ground, or get up quickly. So all-in-all, something effective that deals with all ranges but favours standup! I'm about 5'11" and 63kg, and am going to start resistance training soon - I'm aiming for about 75kg lean to have a base of musculature to start strength and speed training. (Also, it'd nice to look buff for a change  ) Also if its of further relevence, I live in Norwich in Norfolk - so if anybody knows any specific schools or teachers in the area, that'd be of interest too! Cheers, Jack
It's unlikely you'll get all that stuff from a single style. Stand up locks - Japanese Jujitsu specialises in them, and also does groundfighting Palm Strikes/Finger strikes - pretty much every style of karate or kung fu will include these In Wing Chun you would learn, hopefully: Stand up locks- yes, though they are not emphasised as strongly as striking Chokes - no Throws - we mostly have trips, and they are fairly late in the system. WC does have takedowns, but not things like hip throws. Groundfighting - possibly only a small amount, with an emphasis on getting up quickly, and personally I do not think it would be effective against a skilled groundfighter Fingers and palms - yes, though fingers are fairly late on again That's my honest opinion on what Wing Chun includes. Personally, I think a combination of Muay Thai and Japanese JuJitsu would be good for you, though I don't think you would learn fingers or palms in either.
Karate has every your looking for. as for styles i recomend goju ryu not only because thats what i practise but because of its hard and soft techniques..and circular and linear, its really quit a diverse system.
Sounds like karate to me! I am utterly biased, but that genuinely does sound like karate might suit you.
