I moved your canemaster thread as I thought it would get more attention in the Karate Forum
I know very little basics of quarter staff. you have the ordinary blocks and hits like: Block something comming from above you life the stick and step back...lift the stick over your head. for a low stike you bring your opposite end down or over depending on the side of the strike. to block an upper cut type of strike you can put your bow down...like hold it horozontally to stop the attack....just some basic stuff, its mostly just using common sence for a lot of the basics. just basically what you can do from a regular stance like the one on your avatar.
Links-------- My apologies for the lost links try these: http://blackbeltmag.com/archives/blackbelt/1983/jan83/western/western.html http://ejmas.com/jmanly/articles/2001/jmanlyart_a-wp-w_0901.htm There is also a section in Zachery Wylde's 1711 'English Master of Defence'; http://www.the-exiles.org/Manual Zach Wylde.htm If you can read French try this ( or just lookat the pictures)http://membres.lycos.fr/baspierre/baton17.html Click on XIX then look for "Baton" I will attempt to type out Donald Macbane's (1700's) instructions on the quarterstaff in the near future. I'm lost Nice link Prithee. It says on the website that English Combat is now taught in three cities, but I can't find reference to which ones. Any hints?
I just held a staff workshop in Barking, Essex. It was well enjoyed by all that attended. Regards Rob
Hi entropy Terry is currently only doing regular classes in Leicester, but teaches privately in Nottingham and elsewhere. Intending to do regular classes in Nottingham and Derby also in 2005 I believe. You can email him directly if you like, from the website: http://www.englishcombat.com cheers . . . . . Hey Rob, that's interesting. What do you do then? Got any more info?
The core system that we work with at the Exiles is the system that was laid down by Fiore dei Liberi in the early 15th Century. Yet I have been practising staff for a number of years based on a variety of sources from Medieval to the 17th/18th Century. At the seminar we looked at the staff in a very basic way pointing out what is meant by quarterstaff and what is meant by half staff, and introduced in a very brief over view how the usage of staff changed through the centuries. introducing basic wards and guards, using different parts of the staff to form the wards and guards, as well as different actions on the staff to enable defense, we looked at attacking and the way that the biomechanics of the defense can be used to set up a good position to attack using the whole of the body instead of the just the arms, we also briefly looked at the concept of multiple attacks with one movement. We also introduced a variety of techniques that showed closing to grapple and striking with and without the staff, disarms and commanding of the other guys staff, and then bought it all together in a drill which enabled people to try and start using the techniques that they could remember in a controlled fashion. This was a very physical day as the staves being used were 8ft and a good couple of inches in diameter. For me 8ft meets Silver's recommendation on length. I am waiting for some pictures and avi to appear and these will be placed on the Exiles web site, hopefully before christmas. Regards Rob

OK, Sorry Yoda, nothing planned for the first half of the year, but I think that there may be something in the pipeline for the second half of the year as a primer to pole arms. Regards Rob
