Newbie Guide to Martial Arts Doublespeak

    When people say.. They really mean... ------------------------------------------------------------

    Say: Japanese martial arts are the best.
    Mean: I practice a Japanese martial art.

    Say: This art is thousands of years old.
    Mean: This style is decades old.

    Say: The martial arts are about building better people.
    Mean: The martial arts are about sweat, bruises and money.

    Say: Chinese martial arts are the best.
    Mean: I practice a Chinese martial art.

    Say: High kicks are stupid.
    Mean: I can't do high kicks.

    Say: Sparring is extremely important.
    Mean: I'm good at fighting and I like it and I can't do much of anything else.

    Say: The martial arts are about building better people.
    Mean: The martial arts are about beating people up if they lay a finger on you.

    Say: Korean martial arts are the best.
    Mean: I practice a Korean martial art.

    Say: Breaking techniques are very important.
    Mean: We do a lot of breaking techniques.

    Say: I don't believe in grades.
    Mean: Nobody ever gave me a high grade.

    Say: The martial arts are about building better evolved characters.
    Mean: Like me.

    Say: Filipino martial arts are the best.
    Mean: I practice a Filipino martial art.

    Say: Sophisticated arts like Tai Chi and Aikido are far superior.
    Mean: Sparring frightens me.

    Say: He's a good martial arts teacher.
    Mean: He's in my organization.

    Say: He's a lousy martial arts teacher.
    Mean: He used to be in my organization but he broke away and I don't get any money out of him anymore.

    Say: My style is the best.
    Mean: I don't know anything about any other styles.

    Say: Grades are not important.
    Mean: There's a grading coming up and it's important.

    Say: Breaking techniques are useless.
    Mean: I can't do breaking techniques.

    Say: I'm an innovative, free-thinking, modern Western martial arts teacher, doing my own non-classical thing.
    Mean: I'm more interested in teaching than learning; and theOrientals ignore me becausethey know how ignorant I am.

    Say: Martial arts politics are the necessary result of official recognition by respectable associations to protect the public.
    Mean: I belong to a large, well-established organization.

    Say: I hate martial arts politics.
    Mean: None of the large, well-established organizations recognize me or have theslightest interest in my existence.

    Say: In this system, we make the art fit the person.
    Mean: In this system, we make the person fit the art.

    Say: Competitions are a waste of time.
    Mean: I never won any competitions.

    Say: Forms or kata are the highest expression of the inner essence of the martial arts.
    Mean: I read that somewhere -- and I've had enough of tournaments.

    Say: Forms or kata are useless.
    Mean: Bruce Lee said forms are useless and this relieves me of a lot of effort, so go argue with him.

    Say: One style is not better than another -- it's the individual that counts.
    Mean: Don't go to another school --it's the style we teach here that counts.

    Say: The techniques aren't important.
    Mean: The techniques are important.

    Say: The principles are important.
    Mean: I wouldn't know what else to do with the principles so it's the techniques that are important.

    Say: Bruce Lee didn't know what he was talking about.
    Mean: I don't know what Bruce Lee was talking about.

    Say: Size and strength are not important.
    Mean: Size and strength are important, especially if you're fighting somebodywho's bigger and strongerthan you are.

    Say: Science and leverage will always win out over brute force.
    Mean: Except when he's bigger and stronger than you are.

    Say: The purpose of the martial arts is spiritual development and liberation from the ego.
    Mean: I'm so humble and wise, it's terrific.

    I think Mr Andy Murrey had a thread like this a long while a ago. Something about What Martial Artists Really Mean. Think anyone can find it?

    but japanese MA's ARE the best, high kicks ARE stupid and my style IS thousands of years old :D

    Very insightful. I've always noticed that whenever someone says "Such and such is the best style" it's not only the style they practice, but the only style they've ever practiced.
