I started studying Kenpo when I was young and I would like to relearn everything since it was my first love in the martial arts world. I bought Kenpo 5.0 and it is great for the techniques but he does the forms way too fast for me to follow accurately. I was wondering if any of you guys know of good videos online or something I can buy that will slow them down or teach them a step at a time. I appreciate any help that I can get.

I have another question. I was looking at Ebay and they have the Tracy forms dvd. It has all the short and long forms up to 4th degree black belt. I studied under Distlehorst who studied under JT Will. Will Tracy's forms be the same? I know he changed some of the names of moves and stuff but I want to make sure the forms will be the same before I make a purchase. The dvd is selling for 30 bucks and free shipping so it seems like a good deal but I really need some feedback before I proceed.

It doesn't sound like you have an instructor, and if so, which video series you want to pick on is really up to you.

Standard caveat, most people who study only from video generally suck at execution, you should try to find an instructor.

For general purposes Huk Planas probably has the most in depth video explanations of the whys of the Kenpo forms.

Of all the Kenpo seniors out there right now, I probably enjoy watching Mr. Tatums expression the most.

And two of his students have put much of the kenpo material on youtube under the "Casa de Kenpo" channel.

With regard to the Tracy's (I am mostly a Tracy lineage myself), the basic forms are similar to the Parker series through Form 5. "Flavor" tends to be very different, punches are often locked out to the extreme, execution is less fluid, basic stances are a bit different.

I use to have an instructor. His name was Dan Distlehorst who studied under JT Will. I obtained my black belt in Kenpo over 10 years ago but I went on to study other martial arts and I am afraid I have lost most of the knowledge I had. That is the reason I originally bought kenpo 5.0 but I was still having trouble completing the forms like I use to. I will look into the Planas dvds. Thanks for your reply.

VLC media player will play a DVD at a reduced speed. The slow setting is .9 and the slowest wasn't marked but slower than .9 This was a free download, I have used it for about 5yrs now as it plays more file types than media player and I am too cheap to pay for one. This is where I downloaded mine from: http://www.filehippo.com/download_vlc_32/

another vote for VLC media player - somewhere in it you can also set it to "mirror image" the picture which can be a useful learning aid.
plus it plays out-of-region discs (which is very useful here in Oz)
