OK, another day, another video of sochin (I'm trying to remember the pattern so have been watching vids). This one's possibly even better than the previous.

Beautiful? Pretty one-sided with one guy just randomly jerking around while the other one walked right up to him and had his way with him without hardly even trying. Not what I would call a display of clean skill due to one guy being too scared to exchange and the other being much much better. I'd love to see two more evenly matched Gojuka go at it and use more strategy and cleaner technique. I liked the fact that they used open hands, though. Fun video .

A year or so ago, the sports complex near me was hosting the JKA national championships. I had no Idea it was on but stumbled upon it when I was taking the kids swimming.

Anyway, I got talking to one of the dad's at the event and when he asked me where I trained I told him that I was Wado and was just a spectator. His response made me laugh, as he drew air through his teeth and said. Wado...!!??, I used to do that - kumite was vicious - a glorified punch up!!!

I was competing in the eighties (Chrystal Palace was a biggie), but funnily enough - I didn't think it was that bad.

But watching the likes of Messrs Brennan and co. now makes me wonder how quite we got through it.

    Lots of fun though.

Pretty excellent segment from what sounds like a Russian series. Shows Morio Higaonna doing some crazy arm conditioning on a concrete pillar and doing painful looking things to a gigantic Russian.

Anyone know what the Japanese for "beard grabbing technique" is?

The throws and takedowns of Ashihara and Enshin are awesome to watch. There's lots of knockdown tournaments out there that allow these nowadays. As for the grabs and knees, you can hook the back of the neck with an open hand but the Thai-esque clinch he was using isn't allowed.

Yeah, the last tournament I was in allowed the back of the hand stuff. At my dojo, even though we're kyokushin and not ashihara or enshin, we let basically anything go. We do some cross training in judo and some basic wrestling when we can to help. My teacher is from the old-school, such as it were, and prefers the more free kumite to knockdown rules. We only train specifically knockdown rules when we have fighters preparing to compete. I'm glad that competitions are moving back toward a more open ruleset, since the by the books knockdown rules seem terribly limited.

I loved my brief tenure with Enshin. I admired the proficiency of movement from defence to counter on many occasions.

    A typical exchange:
Me: I'm going to smack my shin in this dude's thigh and whilst he's worrying about that I'm going to grab, turn, and knee the bejaysus out of him.

    Excellent, the kick went in.

    Hang on.

Oooh, why am I looking at the ceiling?

Thank God for my thick layer of "padding," this floor's hard!

I hope they don't choose to land that stomp/strike.

I honestly think that Ashihara/Enshin/similar ruleset is pretty much what karate should be. The problem of headpunches will always enter the equation but I think the basic point is still sound: karate should involve striking, getting hold of folk and putting them on the floor sharpish. What would be a better recipe for self defence?

    Mitch :D
