    Hey guys-

I can understand how discussions like this can get quite heated. Fine. Debate is good. But just remember that personal attacks are a violation of MAP's Terms of Service. So long as this doesn't degenerate into swearing and name-calling, you can debate what JKD is or isn't 'til the end of the world. Which is in four years or so according to my conspiracy-theorist buddy. But that aside, this is just your friendly neighborhood topic mod reminding you of what the rules are and asking you very politely to keep it civil.

    Enjoy your debate.

You see exactly the same argument surrounding Yiquan. Some people say you've got to follow all the methods, etc., other people say it's just an idea... so on.

In the end, you're aiming to reach a destination, right? And there's no way to get to the destination without going on the journey, right?

So then it's just a matter of, does this journey get you to the destination. Anythign else is just ego, standing right in the road, blocking you, making it take longer to get there.

To me, Bruce Lee, like Wang Xiang Zhai, percieved a kind of over-arching concept of "quan". Had he lived, I've no doubt, personally, that like Wang, he'd have solved the name/style problem by moving away from a style name, and adopting something along the lines of the concept of QuanXue - the warrior scholar; the expert in "quan". Although using the word "quan", it applies to all martial arts, with different names in different lands.

One thing I do, personally, dislike immensely, is any leeching off the reputation of other people. Does "Bruce Lee's JKD" on a big sign honour the man, or leech off his reputation? Would he want that? It's just a simple shift of mindset to a point where everyone is looking to graduate as QuanXue in their own, personal, specialised expression of the art. That would be much cooler than any style... a lineage of independent stylists who teach you how to unfold your quan, not limit you with theirs.

Sad sad state here. What an egotistical little man you are. Unfortunately, I think your argument has already been blown out of the water. The holder of the system (Inosanto) and the two best fighters from the system (Hartsell and Bustillo) are all concepts guys, not Jun Fan guys. Coincidence?

Additionally, I'm a JKD guy and I train left forward. What do you think about that?

Yet another concepts vs core thread :( Seriously guys, why do you give a damn? If you think what you are doing is better then bully for you, but why do you have to ridicule the other side? Why not just be content that what you are doing is better? I'm getting sick of all the BS with JKD.

What I think, is that I am going to respect the moderators wishes and cease to contribute to this thread anymore! We are all as daft as each other! This arguement will NEVER be resolved, and nothing any of us can say will change the other person's views! Neither of us is right, and neither of us is wrong! I apologise for getting involved, and letting it get to this stage! You are passionate about what you do, and I am about what I do! I think anyone in the Manchester area should try ALL schools, and see which one best suits their needs! Each to their own!

I really dont get why there is so much hassle around this stuff when the Tao of Jeet Kune Do very clearly states what jkd is and should be, it should have stopped there tbh.

Arnoo, you know what that stuff is there for? To transcend.

Every martial art has its "us and them" thing going on, because it's "mods and rockers" - self identity by group identity.

Trad versus wushu, MMA versus trad, Ving Stun versus Wing Chun...

At some point, for those rare sages, the penny drops - all of this is about me, me, me, and my self identity.

Once the penny drops that that's all illusion - not only illusion, but THE most basic trap for a man seeking real knowledge, it's pretty funny. Half the stuff we cling to is just for purposes of self identity, not for its actual usefulness.

    Funny.

Sort of like the bible? Check it out:

And yet we've got Catholics and Protestants and Mormons and Methodists and the Westboro Babtist Church for crying out freaking loud. If people were just learning how to fight as sincerely and honestly as possible, there would be no argument.

Don't make the mistake of setting martial artists in a different bin from other human beings. They are just as egotistical and creative and vindictive and hopeful as everyone else.

    Hello everyone!
I have been made aware of this discussion and would just like to set the record straight! Impact Martial Arts do NOT have any problems with ANY JKD concepts people!! This is an impossibility! The reason for this is because at the EXACT same time as teaching and training AUTHENTIC JKD, we also teach and train Kali, Silat, Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu! (Therefore making us "concepts too!). When we practise JKD we understand what real JKD is, but we also understand the neccessity for other disciplines to be added, in order to become a total fighter! Impact Martial Arts is separate from everyone, as it has one foot on both sides of the arguement, and does not wish to belong to any particular "side"! Impact Martial Arts (under Sifu Dave Carnell's guidance) FULLY comprehends authentic JKD and several other arts at the same time. In a sense you could say we have transcended style! Yet, we feel we also have an obligation to continue the teachings of Bruce Lee, and that authentic JKD has a great deal to offer! We are simply trying to do both things at the same time, and DO NOT want to make enemies out of anyone in the process! ANYONE in the North West area is more than welcome to come and train at Impact Manchester and see EXACTLY what we are ALL about, instead of making a snap judgement based on individual's opinions read on here!
    Respectfully,

As Kierkergaard stated, "If you label me, you negate me"

To some people, Martial Arts is about keeping fit, to others it is a valuable passion they fiercely defend. If all are on the same track to become the best warrior they can be, its natural to decry others methods as inferior.

Chuck Norris told me that in a dream ;)
