I'm not a big fan of Hip Hop but i like these songs [ame="www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJ6zEugJ-uE"]Basslovers United - Ghetto Supastar (Official Video) - YouTube[/ame] [ame="www.youtube.com/watch?v=ju9wZqYBzCI"]Hard Kaur- Bombay Ka Deewana - YouTube[/ame]
neither of those were hip hop. the first sounded like oldschool pop-house with rap. the second was british bhangara, hard kaur does lots of club style british bhangara for the younger generation. Just because something has rap, doesnt make it hip hop. hip hop has it's roots in jazz and funk (golden era hip hop), and later became dutty poetry over classical music (gangsta rap). you need the funk or some "duttiness" to make it hip hop thats what makes de la soul hip hop: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ig5Xi-S0Fjo"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ig5Xi-S0Fjo[/ame] and makes flo-rida trying to sell crappy club music as hip hop cos he's black and raps: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgM3r8xKfGE"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgM3r8xKfGE[/ame] it's what separates older albums of the black eyed peas as hip hop and their new stuff as club crap.

Bhangara remixes not hip hop They're a big genera of music in the UK, they have their own tv channels displaying bhangara. Rishi Rish, Juggy D and the famous Jay Sean started in bhangara and appealing to people of indian descent: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUbpGmR1-QM"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUbpGmR1-QM[/ame] I bought an album featuring hard kaur and a number of other indian "hip hop" people when i lived in india. they were common songs in clubs but no way hip hop. Much like hard kaur, they're not hip hop. they're remixes of old bhangara songs. heres another track from that same cd you might like. Bombay rockers is clearly not rock: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_eHEn9qr4U&feature=related"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_eHEn9qr4U&feature=related[/ame] And one of hard kaurs first songs really appeals to people who understand hindi/punjabi: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5di43i71RDQ&feature=fvwrel"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5di43i71RDQ&feature=fvwrel[/ame]
This is right up my street. A lifetime ago I was a member of a very good breakdance team and was a resident dancer in a nightclub (don't laugh). Even today Hip Hop is one of my favourite music genres. Remember Hip Hop is the culture, with rap being a sub-culture. Just like graffiti is a sub-culture of Hip Hop. One of my favourites is Breakers Revenge from the film Beat Street. This features the new York City Breakers and the Rock Steady Crew and was the first decent Hip Hop film. Everything from rapping, dancing, graffiti and inner city life. I'd have given these guys a run for their money in my day. UK hip hop and reggae is the best. i used to live in maidavale near what used to be the afro-carribean area. london carnival was awesome.
Moving forward we have Run DMC, with Mary Mary being another favourite. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rer7e_g27YI"]Run-DMC - Mary Mary - YouTube[/ame]
Guys like Snoop, Dre, Tupac and the like have done a great deal for gangsta rap, another sub-culture of Hip Hop, and although I have a lot of their music I prefer the times when Hip Hop was about getting out of the "hood" and making a better life for yourself. It used to be about anti drugs and gang messages, especially from groups like Run DMC.
This is an absolute class from Young MC. Another that gets played over and again. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCU-EbEUvCU"]Young MC Know How - YouTube[/ame]
Much of what is passed off as Hip Hop now is little more than over produced R&B. All the groups I have posted are still going and are major players in the industry.

I suppose it was like Rock 'n' Roll or punk, it really felt like the start of a movement. Times were easier, groups of us could together in the park with a sheet of linoleum and dance. People used to gather round and watch. I'm sure either the police or the authorities would move people on now. We used to hire a hall and teach break dancing and body popping. you couldn't do it now. We had no insurance, CRB checks hadn't been thought of and health and safety had not been invented.
I used to be a DJ and was really up on the latest music trends, especially where dance and Hip Hop was concerned. I don't get the chance to listed to much music now, and don't know any of the stuff you guys are posting. It is good stuff though.
