I am trying to organise a Women Self Defence course in our club and need some help for ways to get out when a woman is forced to the ground , in cases of rape etc.

Does anyone know of any sites or threads that show some photos of these instances ?

Since I train kung fu ,ground fighting is not so common during our training .

    Thanks

Please please please don't teach them the usual rubbish that I have seen in women's self defence (kick to the groin, trying to break a grip using two hands, etc).

Make sure they leave knowing that if a guy is attempting to rape them, they can strike out with finger strikes, fish hooks, biting, scratching. Stuff that works as opposed to silly kicks to the groin that rarely work

Would not it be better to get someone in who specialises in this type of course?

Women’s defence/protection is IMHO a specialised area. By trying to stick various MA techniques together and make a course out of it I think you’d be doing your perspective students a disservice.

The very fact that you’re having to ask for help Re: techniques sets alarm bells off in my head.

    HI Incubus

A little advise that I hope will help, I speak from experience. If these are students who are only attending the self defense lessons. When teaching rape techniques make sure that you have a female instructor present and demonstrate the techniques on her.

Try not to put yourself into the position where you are demonstrating a technique on a student no matter how many students or how keen they seem to be. You just need to have an accidental slip or for them to move the wrong way and all sorts of accusations could be made. Protect yourself and keep that umbrella up by not putting yourself in a sort of situatuation where any possible kind of inuendo could be made.

    Rape technique.

Attacker kneeling astride opponent, straight arms, strangling the victim. (This can be done with the attacker between the victims legs). The victim then brings right leg up in line wth left knee, with foot firmly planted on the floor. Pinch both triceps, ensure that you grab enough to be able to pull and push and twist all at the same time. All at the same time, Pull down with the left hand, push up with the right and push up with the hips to the left. If the attacker was between the legs role over and drive elbow into the inside of the thigh.

    Hope this helps

I feel that if you haven't been trained in methods of escaping from ground attack than you obviously cannot teach your females students effectively only from reading & viewing pictures of these methods online.

I suggest you contact a good SD instructor in your area and become certified in a good basic Rape Prevention & Escape program.

    you're bang on spooky...

incubus, if you haven't got the experience abandon the idea or get in someone else to take over...its a noble thing you are trying to do...and i commend you for that...

but too much crap is taught at this sort of thing in a very short space of time and there is a real danger that women can be encouraged to be confident in skills they simply haven't aquired.

from various conversations with females who have both been in terrible situations and attended such courses, a common feeling is that unless the course is run properly it is worse than useless...and could lead to increased danger, the very opposite of what the course intends to do.

as an off-the-top-of-my-head example, if a women fights back with a useless technique that doesn't get her out of the situation there is a real chance the aggressor could respond very negatively to this...perhaps he only wanted her purse...but she fought back ineffectively...now he thinks he'll 'teach her a lesson'...

the bottom line, is if you want to highlight how your art can be used specifically by women within a night at the dojo, that is one thing...but i would expect anyone who is going to do this to already have a clear idea in their head about what they are going to teach...

but your post implies that you are looking to run a course in which you will be standing there showing women how to cope with a situation you clearly don't know how to deal with...that isn't right.

and then to make it worse, you are going to try and demonstrate methods you are only learning now...from pictures on a web-site...no way...please think seriously about what you are planning to do...it would be more beneficial to give them the URL and let them work it out for themselves...at least then they would be under no illusion!!!

my opinion is that for these courses to be truely beneficial then the best people to run them are women who know exactly what they are doing and exactly what they are talking about.

Check out my sensei's wife's course. She's one of the top women's self defence course leaders and has studied under many of the martial art's experts. Her site is www.michelleannese.com and she also does conferences. Check it out and e-mail her for info if you want.

teach all the gurls how to scream really loudly in the attackers face i find that as a good self defence technique normally if someone shouts it really throws an attacker off balance... especially if youve just eaten garlic or something

Hit him hard, preferably with something sharp. There's not much people can do if they're pinned to the ground by a bigger opponent, especially if they're women who just took a one hour course.

If you could teach a way for women to escape from mount on a bigger, better trained opponent, in just an hour (without weapons or something), you should be a wrestling coach.

Focus on the cheap shot, when the attacker is exposed, the weapon usage, and avoidance, as there's not too much you could do for actual wrestling style escapes in just an hour.

It is time I explain what I mean with my question. What I am looking for is a short course of around 20 lessons which should give the women who attend an awareness of the dangers around them. And Yes, it can give them an idea how to defend themselves in certain situations.
I will not market it as a way to become a Black Belt ... like the various adverts we see everyday in the Media. It s just a way to help the community. Than if some of them like the idea of learning how to defend themselves, they can take up a Martial Art , maybe even in our Club.
I do not think it is a bad thing try to do this, its not a way to get rich, thats for sure. I live in Malta, a very small country , and maybe such an event will attract 10 people....

don't get me wrong, i didn't for a minute think that you were trying to rip people off or make a buck out of them...

just that you are asking the ladies who attend your course to put a significant degree of trust in both you and the material you will sharing with them...

womens self defence is a specialist subject...there are many factors that need to be considered...until a few years ago, i wasn't really aware of this...but conversations with females who have been attacked made me realise this.

if you would like some advice from someone who is qualified, check out

    this site

the lady in questions husband is a regular poster on this site, who's user name is his real name...i'm sure if you PM'd him or contacted her through their website they would be happy to offer you some more concrete advice.

    hope this helps :)

    Incubus,

Your heart is in the right place, and the idea is a good one. But before you begin to train anyone, as many of us have suggested, you need further training yourself. And while we can give you good ideas, this forum isn't where you're going to find the information you need.

Since it doesn't appear that you have immediate access to a formalized training program, you'll need to fins otherways to learn what you are missing. First, I'd suggest heading to your local book store or Amazon (or what ever online book reseller you have) and getting a number of books on Women's self defense and self defense in general.

Next, you really need to supliment your ground game, so you can teach basic escapes. Finally, I'd suggest contacting your local police department to see if they have materials.

Self defense is a skill and must be learned. And it isn't necessarily the same thing as martial art training.

    - Matt
