if someone throws a jab cross combo at you do you. slip the jab(go to your right) then slip the cross (go to your left)

or do you slip jab and bump under the cross (bump is like a minny duck with some movement to the right)......this is so you dont get blasted as you come right into the right by slipping right.

slip lives up to his namesake

ok... my perspective. Anything that gets you out of the way without having to take the shots on board cleanly. Ideally... in a perfect situation assuming both fighters are orthodox:

    1) opponent throws left jab
    2) slip to your right (shoulder over ching, left arm across mid section, right guard up)
    3) opponent follows with a right
    4) arm positions switch simultaneously as you slip to your left this time

    then... the counter...

    5) left hook (your next logical and most powerful punch from this position)
    6) right cross (again... the logical punch with the most power from here)
    7) back out on the jab (if neither shot lands clean then keep your man at bay by working out off the jab)

ok... so as you can see it's a very boxing oriented combo. The slipping as you know has to be 1st nature. If you have to even think about it consciously instead of instinctively then it usually doesn't come off. And with slipping there is little in between... you've either slipped their punches or worn them.

In Muay Thai or K-1 rules slipping can be a slightly different animal. I will try to counter off the single slip rather than slip left and right hoping for a boxing type set up.

FWIW... Below is an example of a fight from a while back where I managed some slips to keep from wearing a shot by someone I knew could out punch me if I let them get set. The distance of the slip itself is key... too much of a slip and making up all that distance back up to be in position to counter usually doesn't happen. I'll show it at regular speed... then slowed down so you can try to glean something from it. Here it's worth noting that I will will often try to slip and counter at the same time. I use it to good effect here. There has been a time or two that I've gotten pasted by not rolling the shoulder enough during the slip. So six of one half dozen of another. lol.

Slipthejab slipping the jab (I'm the blue corner)

edit: it's also worth noting... the whole thing isn't planned out in my head with such precision. lol. It's largely instinctive. I'd like to think that's because of drilling it in training over and over. Or it could just be the bodies natural response to get out of the way of an incoming fist. :D

I'll have a look through some of my boxing footage to see if I can find any of the slip right slip left movements that I mention first off in the thread.

Look at a lot of old school Tyson. He was THE MAN in this regard.

Agreed - Kevin Rooney had him on the slip bag a lot. I think I've done a thread here about making a slip bag. If not I've should. Great piece of kit.
Actually come to think of it... no need. Grim had done a great job on it - mine was made of beans or rice in a doubled plastic shopping bag... duct taped to the end
of a bit of dog chain. I find the chain works better than almost anything in terms of being able to get that pendulum swing you want out of a maize bag. As you aren't clobbering the maize bag it doesn't matter that it's not made of robust leather:

Here is Malinaggi with some nice head movement and slippage going on. This is another great tool the double-ended bag or floor-to-ceiling bag. Not seen much outside of boxing gyms. If you buy one piece of kit as a boxer this would be high up on the lists. Easier to put up than a heavy bag. Takes up less space and can stowed away much easier. Teaches better habits than a heavy bag will. For my money right at the top of the list in boxing kit.

by contrast you can see Juarez's style on the bag is a bit different.

and I've probably posted this clip 10 times on MAP... because it's quality boxing at it's best. Head movement... slipping... bobbing and weaving... showboating (lol!) and neither fighter is a bum. Both are top notch boxers. True technicians. You probably can't even count the number of slips that Pee Wee manages when avoiding Magoo's punches. :D

FWIW - If you watch these fights and I mean really watch them. Look at what is going on and what counters are being thrown and what shots are getting set up off the slip and the bob and weave it can really start to inform your training.

I'd highly suggest two things for anyone serious about studying boxing. A pen and paper, a software to download the video off of YouTube (there are many free ones - I use a software called SnagIt) and a software that you can run the video in slow motion (Windows Movie Maker that ships standard with windows can do this)...

armed with that you can really start to dissect what is actually going on. Much of the sweetness in the sweet science happens to fast for us to really study it in an in depth way. So use technology to get around that. I've been doing this for ages and it's a massive help to understanding what is being set up. Obviously no match for training under a good boxing coach.. but in conjunction with it... it's invaluable.
