Guys and Gals, Can anyone explain the origins of "Gigotai" in Aikido? In Judo, Gigotai refers to a "defensive posture" however in Aikikai it is a paired ken exercise. Any thoughts? Dave
Never heard of it in Aikido mate, the Judo one is usually spelled jigotai though...dunno if it helps.
Would you happen to know the name of the teacher from where the paired practice comes from? I ask because under aikikai, with all the different teachers and orgs, I know there are different paired practices. Under Saotome sensei's paired practices, 1-12, I can honestly say I have never heard any reference to gigotai or jigotai except as a defensive posture. cheers, bamboo
...Mr. William Smith MBE (Hombu Shihan) United Kingdom Aikikai I have seen and used this application many times and to be honest, I've never seen fit to ask the question directly, what spured me today was last night's training at my own dojo. Dave
Gigotai or Jigotai has always been a low squating posture where I train. It isn't really taught anymore though.
I asked my sensei and all I got back was the "defensive" posture during the partner practices. Wish I could have helped more. cheers, bambeer
Jigotai is the posture used in static paired ken striking and is exactly the same as the stance in Karate.
