I've been thinkin about starting judo for a few months now and I'm starting tomorrow morning. this is sort of a spur of the moment thing though so what should I expect from my first lesson and what mentality should i have? Sort of a wierd question but after mma I'm a bit worried about having the wrong attitude going into a traditional art.
    Thanks people!

koyo Passed away, but always remembered. RIP.

Empty cup and all that. Go in willing to watch and listen..make no comparisons. REALLY study the PRINCIPLES. and enjoy the training.

    Best of luck.

Don't judge on it's first lesson. Nothing negative but UK judo is usually 50/50ish groundwork and standing and you don't know what lesson you are walking into. Next one might be very different. Give it a couple of weeks to decide anything.

You'll be surprised of the overlap with BJJ

From my experience I'd expect to be picked up, hurled around and generally roughed up by men the size of silverback gorillas.

I have no idea like I said this is spur of the moment. I was looking at that facebook page you sent me before and the sensei opened a new class. Pretty sure its adults only though and everywhere I've seen 16 is usually fine. I'll give him a bell in the morning anyway

I was waiting for the reply as to whether he was training as an adult but.........

Hot baths and plenty of rest. Judo is tough, real tough. You're going to learn how to fly!

Stick it out and we'll see you in the UFC yet!

For all this "gentle art" stuff its got one hell of a rep :D
Had plenty of practice with the hot baths and being thrown about mate, dunno bout the ufc though. Might have to drop their standards a bit

I wouldn't bet on that. The Gentle Art take no prisoners.

For visible injuries it wins hands down. Like a lovebite but a foot long usually.

I know what you want out of M/A. Contact is high on the list.
Just warning you that the contact in judo might be a little higher than in MMA. Everyone gets a bite of the cherry in judo, only the fighters in MMA.

See if there is a specialised randori class and join it.
Where the action(pain) is. (No wonder he ran away:rolleyes:)

Even I'm not completely sure yet MD
I know, but it is one of the things that I like about it. MA's one of my stress relieving thingys so more contact is pretty fine by me really.

technical queston: I know judo's famous for throwing but can you still do locks in randori?

Those two paragraphs are the same. You want reality and something that works. How you get there is limitless.

More limited than BJJ but my sons club taught banned techniques as well. These sport martial arts seem to manage teaching one thing for sport, one for the win and one for the street.

you said something half way wise there. Point taken though, thanks

Fair enough I'm not relying on this for defence training so i'm not too concered with that this time round. Bit more leeway

After the first lesson you will have a new found appreciation for learning to break fall properly...

Good point. Am I going to have to learn completely new breakfalls since im going to be thrown rather than just double legged?
