I do ITF. I think my favourite pattern tends to be my current one. I just graded to black belt, so I don't really know the black belt patterns very well.
I love doing Choong Moo, because its got all the fun side kicks.
Of the junior Tuls I like Joong Gun and Toi Gye( most people seem to hate this one).
So if you ever get me as your judge at a patterns comp, you know what your designated pattern is going to be!

I'm an ITF guy, and we do the Chang Han patterns in our school, Chon Ji up through Choong Moo. I'm not familiar with the Tae Baek, but I Googled it, and I don't think it's the same pattern as Gae Baek.

    My current form, palwe 8.

I really like koryo. I practice it sometimes so when I have to test for my black belt it is near perfection.

My favorite form is Do san, but I really like to watch Hwa Rang.

I like Taegeuk 8 as well as Koryo.

And surprisingly I actually enjoy doing Keumgang as well even though it has no kicks. I find the balancing, rotation and hard blocks rather fun.

Keumgang is a very difficult form to do well. I've seen very few people who actually perform it well.

ITF patterns - Kwang Gae, Ge Baek.
WTF patterns - Sipjin, Koryo Soh (I know the last one isn't an official KKW form, but it's nice nevertheless...).

In our school we do both WTF Taeguk and Yudanja Poomse as well as ITF forms.

Hwa Rang is nice, but I'm also warming to Choong Mu more and more as well. :)

How do you like the ki chos?I use them as part of my warm up and find them to be a great way to help wake/warm up as I train at 5:30 AM daily.

i havnt investigated the elbows and knees and such, but i am really supprised at the black belts that dont know saju jirugi has throws in it.
seriously, why do you practise forms? for self defense, so how can you, if you dont know how to apply your patterns??

fair enough for beginners or colour blets, but if you believe the applications of a low block are just to block a kick, then you need to investigate things more...
ill stop now cos ill start something that has nothing to do with this thread, but i hope people will try to look into their patterns in more deapth, so that TKD/patterns/kata in general can get a bit more respect.
phew. anyway, i think i have more than one favourite...my BB fave is gae bek, and colour, i used to really like yul gok for the power you can put into it, and also hwa rang and won hyo cos of the cool combos.

ps: in fact after thinking about it in my head i can see some knees working in there. patterns are not set in stone, they are to be experimented with

You'd be surprised. Just because one of the movements in the pattern is not labelled a throw, it doesn't mean that the way the pattern flows between techniques can't be moulded into a throw, or simply adapt the technique to the situation. :)

I find it very hard to believe that General Choi put all theses secret moves in the patterns, and then chose some guy from the UK to reveal these secret Techniques.

Sure you can change the techniques to have different applications. But then you are no longer doing the pattern. You are doing something that you made up.

how can you as a single person be adament that its not possible? fair enough you find it hard to believe but thats just your opinion.
and its not some guy from the uk actually, the guy who showed us is renowned for unlocking patterns in that way, and is an 8th dan in karate, a 7th dan in TKD and has been doing tai chi since he was a young child. he is definately an oriental master, whether that changes anything im not sure.
the techniques are not changed, because if you really think that a low block is to block a kick only, then you need to study tkd in more deapth.
why are the hands in a certain position at the top? that is because you can use this position to trap an arm, then with the low block take it down and step forward to sweep the leg.
and thats not changing it at all. a low block has loads of uses, so i think that is enough evidence to show that the applications are much more than we think.
and, they work 10 times better.

Should read the latest Black Belt mag, they have an excellent article in there about the top ten martial arts myths - among board breaking = deadly, death touches, and other ludicrous things, they had a bit on "secret techniques."

When I said "some guy" I was refering to the post about this by "mattsylvester".
I did ask my instructor about this, he told me that it was false.

Also often there are people who promise to teach these "secret techniques" which that have invented or imagined, for their own personal gain. Ie either for the financial benefit of being the sole possessor of this secret knowledge, and to have "one up" on those that don't. I get email every other week asking me if I would like to buy the DVD's that will teach me the REAL moves and applications of TaekwonDo.
The fact that the guy who showed you this alternative application is "renowned for unlocking patterns" suggests to me that he is just unother charlatan who has thought of quite imaginative way to part people with their money. I would like to know, exactly, how he discovered these secret moves.

People like this, will teach this knowledge to a select few (Who can pay) so that they also belong to this elite group, 'who really understand what is going on'.
Why would General Choi teach the real moves to some guy in Texas (for example) and not his closest students and followers nor is it mentioned in the encyclopedia?
I can't find anything about these alternative applications in the encyclopedia, or anything other legitimate source.

Suprisely my study of TaekwonDo hasn't been that shallow, that I understand that low outer forearm block can have more than one application. Please do not tell me what I need to be doing in regards to my TaekwonDo training.

Going back the original post about these secret applications in patterns. Its sadly not true that there these secret moves in the patterns, though by all means you can imagine them there if you wish. The patterns are exactly as they are set out in the encyclopedia.
I reiterate my first point, that while there can be minor differences in the interpretation of the pattern when you are performing it, changing the moves mean that you are no longer doing the pattern.

As for the black belt magazine, can't get it in Australia, unless you can provide a link that I can read it online.
Personally I find most of the TKD mags (and mags in general really) to be a bit trashy and sensationalist. Though an article about death touches does sound, amusing.
