Mitch aren't you a TKD guy - why the switch? is it due to the locality of the club, or did you just fancy something different? Gary
Soon you'll be saying OSU in everyday conversation and be fully infected with the disease that is knockdown karate.
I've osu-ed at work loads of times. Luckily, you can usually disguise it as a sigh or a mangled "yes".
I'm still teaching and training in TKD, no change there. The reasons for me having a go at Enshin are many and varied, I'll do a looooong post if you like; I think the reason for me staying there will be if I continue to enjoy it Mitch Osu! Am I correct in thinking that translates roughly as "I understand?"
See this is where I think the more correct "Hai" has its benefits. Unlike Osu which is hard to make sound like yes, I often react with "Hai" in these situations and then of course thats the scot in me "Aye". Gary
Glad you enjoyed it Mitch. Just realised I haven't conversed with Gary on the Abernethy forum for over a year now. I find it difficult enough to keep up with threads on MAP! Ref 'Osu' I am in the group than generally dislikes it. So far as I am aware, from the old 24 Fighting Chickens website, an accurate translation is 'Yo!'.
That is exactly the correct usage. It makes sense if you remember that all the early Japanese karate practitioners were college jocks.
They did also say "Yoi" or "Oi" a lot. Sometimes twice. Starting a sequence of movements in response to the shout "Oi oi!" was all a bit Essex boy for a Northern lad like me Mitch
Agreed, It's kinda like the verbal / "Jock" equivalent of slapping each others backsides - after winning a point in a sporting contest. Can I have a whoop whoop!!!??? Gary
Whoa, whoa, whoa! I'm pretty darn secure in my sexuality and fully down with my homosexual brothers and sisters, but I'm not slapping the backside of some bloke in sweaty pyjamas, verbally or otherwise! Mitch
Yoi means ready. Oi I think means step, but I'm not sure out of context. Of course they could all have been wide/rude boys. And if you don't slap sweaty arses you can never be a TRUE karate-ka. It's why we're better than you lot
