Thought I'd share some of my teacher's words every once and a while. This evening he was describing a koan that used three gates as an imagery. One of the students spoke up. Student: Do the three gates represent body, mind, and spirit? Seunim: You are far away. Student: Aren't there eight gates? Seunim: Why don't you suck a fart out of my ass? Later this evening, he went on to describe the words in a koan as being like "gunsmoke", and saying that we must penetrate through to the heart of the gunman. I'm gonna use "Heart of the Gunman" for a book title. It just sounds cool.
