My pastor believes that Schitzophrenia(sp?) and other psychological disorders are actually people possesed by demons. I don't agree. I think there are people with genuine psychological issues, resulting from an imbalanced brain, and performing an exorcism on them is not going to cure them.

I have never actually seen an exorcism up close but i know people who have. They say its scary. What does everyone here think of it?

Your pastor is an idiot and talking utter bollocks.

Not to mention being highly irresponsible by being in a position of power and influence whilst spreading such tripe. It puts vulnerable people at even more risk.

Psychological disorders have nothing to do with daemons. Many have known causes, and treatment of them has grown by leaps and bounds since we stopped calling them demons.

Apologies for going off topic, but why do people do this:

If you think/know the spelling isn't right, why not look it up?

The google tab is all the way on the other side of the screen. That would be a pain.

I would really, really like to know what he bases this opinion on. It's been many years since I have been involved in any serious Biblical study but I cannot recall any verses that could support this view.

For one, he bases it on Jesus casting out the legion of demons from the crazy man. I can't remember the chapter and verse right off but when Jesus commands the demon to say his name the demons reply Legion for we are many. Jesus then orders them out of the man and into a herd of swine which run off a cliff.

Well, regardless of motive, he is wrong. Mental disorders are not in fact demons.
