If they can do the required forms and/or get points in tournaments/competitions, then great, I say they deserve them.

When it comes to kids (especially 12 years old and under as specified in the op), martial arts is not about "self defense." Come on, be real, there's little chance a kid can overpower and adult in "real life."

Sadly no - actually he nearly had a gong sau when he did a "how to beat bjj" style video and someone actually called him out on it and went to his "dojo".....I believe there was much backing of tracks

That he thinks what he is doing is legit is not surprising (hanshi's be crazy), but it sounds like he actually runs a school where he has convinced other people that he is legit. I can't even...

    Oh it gets worse.....

0:50 onwards is priceless in this video, but for the best part and to skip the torture of listening to him "articulate" the moves just go to 2:44

I think you missed Mazulus previous posts where they stated that it was and that a 9yr old in the video was a match for an adult attacker.

    Love and hate kenpo.
It can be anywhere from really good, to movie foo.

But that one hurt my sensibilities! Movie foo MUST look good AND have music in the background.

Not a match for an adult, but probably enough to avoid being beat up by an adult (strike, run away, evade). I am also sure that a black-belt kid can hold their own in the playground. Am I wrong?

    Yes you are.

For a start it is completely dependent on what that belt stands for and then a whole host of other factors.

Ordinarily I'd scoff at the thought, however one of the lads that train with me got his shodan when he was 14 (or maybe even before).

He's now 18 (and still shodan) technically excellent (for his grade) and one of the best Wado fighters on the circuit in his category.

But he is not your average 18 year old.

The strike takes up valuable running away time. A child can't hit a determined adult hard enough to stun them. They can make them angry though.
Kids rarely get into serious fights. It's just handbags 99% of the time.
