I would get a long bag (duh, I guess). I can't really think of much else. Get 2 different color mats so you can lay out a ring on the floor. You could always get a long bag. I'd try to get some weights, a bench and a squat rack too, but that's just me, and it's also pretty expensive.

A plyometric platform would be nice too.

    ehh
    this sucks...
my moms not letting me get a hanging bag because she feels the rafters won't hold it.
and we are currently renting the house so she doesnt want to take chances.
    !@#$%^&*

i REALLY didnt want to settle for a free-standing bag because thats not what im used to at my gym, but it looks like thats my only current option.
wall mounting just doesnt seem like an option.
can anybody think of ANY ideas that would convince my mom otherwise, because i really want a banana bag.
cant hang one on any trees in my back yard, they are all loblolly pines, which only have branches starting at like 30-40 ft in the air.
or maybe somebody can suggest a good alternative, i heard the wavemaster xxl's were decent, but i just dont feel like dishing out 300 bucks for something, when im drooling over a flippin nice fairtex banana bag for roughly the same price.

If you have some welding skills you could build a tube steel structure to hold up a heavy bag, or a few heavy bags for that matter. Granted you could probably procure one from a specialist retailer, but iirc they are expensive.

Get an old scaffold plank and fix it across the rafters of the garage, make sure it's fixed into several of them. This should spread the load across all the rafters. Mount the bag to through the plank.

assuming it's an open, unfinished garage, you should be able to reinforce the rafters. 2x4s aren't going to hold anything, but doubled 2x6s across the garage and another pair going over four or more of those should.

What's the material and dimensions of the rafters?

If it's not possible to hang it from the ceiling, can you not just hang it from the wall?

If it's a full length bag, you could use it for GnP practice on the ground. No need to hang it up.

    Great thanks everyone.
Martial dad that seems like the best bet for me.
Or yohan's last two ideas ( cant circle the bag with stands, too bulky, and just plain too expensive)

Can someone elaborate on the reinforcing process? im not the greatest handyman out there :D lol
Walking the path- thats awesome, but its definitley somethitng that i would build upon lol. thanks thats a great idea though

Also, what kind of mats should i be using? puzzle mats seem good, anybody got anything cheaper/better etc

best would be permanent matting. second would be a used wrestling mat. third best would be zebra mats. puzzle mats come after that, but are what you'll probably end up with.

Place a plank across the bottom of your rafters, where the board meets the rafters put in some sort of bolt, screw or nail. Just make sure whatever fastener you use is rated to take the kind of force you're working with. Also, make sure you mount it to as many rafters as possible. My friend mounted his to four rafters, and when we hit the bag, the floor in his kitchen flexes somewhat. I think they used bolts to mount it...

First you're going to have to get a longish scaffold plank. Use one of these as they are very good quality and quite cheap 2nd hand, check out scaffold yards in the yellow page or equiv. Get one as long as you can.

You'll need coach screws, make them 3 times longer (at least) than the scaffold plank. These would do.

    http://www.screwfix.com/prods/29760...rews-A2-Stainless-Steel-M8-x-100mm-Pack-of-10

Pre-drill some holes in the scaffold plank to line up with the joist (either by measuring or get someone to hold the plank up and mark the positions)
Make these holes the same width as the coach screws, no bigger.

Get someone to hold the plank back up and whack a couple of big screws in to hold it steady. Now it's in place mark the holes onto the joists, thin screwdriver should do the job. Unscrew the plank, pre-drill the joists, this time the drill should be about a 1/3 the width of the bolts. (or get a really long drill bit of the correct size and drill it once it's up, this way a few nails smacked in the middle would do to hold it in place)

Bolt it up, using a socket set.

When you mount the bags use some really wide washers on the top of the plank. Like these if you can get them.

(if your garage falls down I accept no responsibility)

    Good luck!

Edit: How far apart are the joists?

Get as long a plank as possible and make sure the pilot holes in the joists are in the middle. Aim to span at least 5 joists, more if possible.

Out of interest what are the walls of the garage made of?

wood beams kinda, itts weird to explain. theres kind of a wood backing thats pretty thin, and there about 2 inch thick vertical beams runnin across

Dude, use this thing, it's literally designed for exactly what you want to do. It's going to do exactly what you want it to. Just hang a spring from it and it will dampen the bouncing, plus if you get a banana bag it's probably going to sit on the floor anyway.
