That looks pretty horrendous... I'd love to go somewhere where they were training like that just to see what would happen if they gave me a training knife and asked me to attack.

brutal stuff. brutal as in bad. pretty much the reason i stopped doing aikido for bjj is i went to an aikido dojo that also does systema, and the aikido has lots of systema influence. here's the video. might have posted it on this thread before, but can't remember.

Could you explain what's wrong with this video? Obviously, this isn't full-speed, full-resistance training, but I don't think it's supposed to be.

no pressure. no timing. nonsense attacks and defense. completely unrealistic and unnatural movements. static ukes.

what's the point of training if you're not going full-speed, at least most of the time?

I, for one, think there is a lot to be learned from training slowly. Obviously, you don't want to do too much of it, but it's a good way to examine your technique.

Training slowly has its place, but in the video above there were times when the guy lost his grip completely, and the uke helpfully let him grab back on. I'm of the belief that if you screw up a technique, you improvise, not reset, learn to adapt instead of relying on the other guy helping you look good.. I love aikido and have seen some poor videos, but that one made me cringe :s

After watching the video a little more closely, I see what you're talking about. That wouldn't fly at my dojo, either. I rescind my opposition.

More fantasy knife defense from little kids doing TKD. This time with annoying music.

Haha, i dont know how anyone could walk around a dojo like that! (no sleeve red gi :) )
I particularly like the one where she fumbles at the guys knees and then pulls him down on top/toward her, ensuring her death!
Ofcourse i dont want to seem to be directing my criticism toward her directly, as she unfortunately would not know any better.
The Master Ken fella should be ashamed of himself (wearing that gi lol) and teaching youngsters that stuff.

At green it should be basics and more basics, i guess he values retention opposed to quality teaching, whats new hey.

This is hardly what I would call a knife attack yet alone defense against a knife. Disarming techniques such as the one demonstrated in the first example (wrist locks) will not generally work against opponents bigger and stronger than yourself in a standing face on situation. As for the second and third demonstrations, again similar problem, these are not a good examples of real knife attacks. The defense is far too impractical, considering the height and strength differences. Another thing too, people generally don't stop attacking you once you've grabbed them, especially if he or she wants to do some damage. Fat chance he or she will just stand there with a smile on their face while you knee them in the head. If any of these attacks occurred in a real life situation, there would be no way this little lady would be able to use any of these techniques demonstrated in this video successfully.

Everyone underestimates running away (usually and always the best option when facing a weapon), or picking up and throwing objects to create distance, or firing a stiff kick to groin. How come none of these tactics are ever demonstrated in these sort of videos?

Now this video seriously crosses the line, I guarantee that if you try any of these tactics you'll be worse off than doing nothing. Lol at the beginning when he states, if your attacker is this far away (which isn't actually that far) "If someone has a gun and they're this far away, they're going to shoot you, good luck". Brilliant advice. And I forgot to mention, these techniques will only work with guns that bend. The Police department which he stated he learnt this technique from had this to say:

The choke at the end looks great (against someone who is 20 pounds lighter than yourself of course). The defense against the roundhouse kick is terrible, why on earth would you want to duck down under a kick that isn't aiming for your head, yet alone near it?

Here is a better and more fail safe defense against the standing guillotine choke. For a more practical street self defense version, instead of grabbing the knee, grabbing the groin would be more ideal. At least you don't have the weight of the aggressor on your back.
