That was the feeling I had about it too. I didn't listen to their last album much but there was nothing that you could imagine blasting out of a stadium (like City of Blinding Lights) or anything guitar-heavy. It sounded like it was written with the current charts in mind - very same'y (Coldplay-like), that will get them near the top of the charts but not stand out from the rest of the trash that's out there.
I've not heard the new one. I'm not surprised to hear that people don't like it - but usually "they" don't like it for the wrong reasons. Anth's comment "...not stand out from the rest of the trash that's out there." seems to suggest that this time, people may not like it for the right reasons. They'd always gone against the grain since the early days and warn't one's to take the gravy train when it came through - they'd stopped half-way through a successful American tour (Boy had just come out, IIRC) to come to Ulster to play their first gig there - meant a lot to them to do that. Ironically Led Zeppelin had done the same thing almost exactly 10 years previously - at a time when English bands warn't exactly keen on playing gigs in Belfast. It had meant a lot to them as well. Anyroads, they went out of their ways not to sound like themselves. The sole exception to that would be the Rattle and Hum era - they'd begun to take themselves too seriously at that point - Which is why subsequent albums went to opposite extremes with Achtung Baby and the Zootropa Tour - I thought it brilliant - paradising themselves; but people didn't get it. It went over their heads. Too bad if the new songs are all that dull/same-same. That'd be the one thing they'd hate more than being just plain stinkers. That's the thing, when U2 are experimental, they really are experimental. The new album just blends in with everything else - if you heard it playing somewhere, you wouldn't immediately think "hold on, that's one of U2's new songs."

Far less sleazy and Stooges-inspired than their first few albums, but good stuff all the same. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OUY5GOOGcY"]The Murder City Devils - Press Gang[/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9nR9DUUBJo"]MCD - I Drink the Wine[/ame]

Samhain are doing some shows around the US. I think they are possibly my favourite band of Danzig's. The Misfits are great, but a bit "obvious", and Danzig albums are a bit hit 'n' miss. It would be great to see Samhain live; a nice blend of goth, punk and metal. Have to go to that. There's a Michael Monroe (Hanoi Rocks) cover of Do Anything...on Youtube. We live in the same town, I see him riding around on his old push bike all the time, so I wonder if he'll be joining them on stage...the man can't keep away. Reading your post, it just occurred to me that I've not been to a show or concert in forever. Me and the wife were complaining the other day about havin' turned our lives completely over to the rearing of the bairns. I think I'll round up who's playing the venues this weekend
Take the whole family! I was supposed to see Negative Approach tonight, but with this dam flu I can't be bothered with the 4 hr round trip.
