Be nice if we can get a few others posting their videos. It doesn't have to be to descriptive, just a 30 second clips will get discussion going. Part 2 of the new footwork video done. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zymaUgG3siw"]Stepping Forward and Back Part 2 - YouTube[/ame]
finally got access to a heavy bag, so i filmed myself doing some thingies. i'll have it edited and uploaded soon. (it's basically a high jab > low cross/hook > other stuff combo) also yay for official MAP youchoobz! your "lift the foot" method is quite similar to what i do, but not quite the same. i'll see if i can get a video of my stepping later so we can compete to see whose footwork is bigger
huzzah! it lives! (but the sound is borked cause my phone camera is dumb) [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhR3UnA8Pdk"]tech. thread bag stuff. - YouTube[/ame] i started with the thought of "what flows well and can be done with power?", which led to jab, cross, elbow, grab+leg technique. then i thought "too many moves", and just focused on doing the high jab and low cross properly, without the elbow and aiming more to move off to the side at close range (and also of starting without my hands up). the general idea is that the lead straight aims to pummel the face while the cross is a power shot that threatens high but strikes at the body, and if both connect you follow along with the momentum of the cross and do other stuff (against an unresisting bag with no arms or legs it's easy to say "then you elbow and then you kick", or whatever, but obviously that is always conditioned by how the opponent reacts), but you can also try to use it to just rush forwards to a closer distance if that's your thing.
Part 3 - Side Stepping. Part 4 will be on circling and Part 5 will put it all together. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtaMrUrS8K8"]Side Stepping Part 3 - YouTube[/ame]
karate stepping video! sound is borked because the wind is dumb and my tablet mic sucks (also i should never become a public speaker), so you'll need to turn the volume up a lot if you want to hear [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0uWmmhQxrw"]krotty stepping - YouTube[/ame] it's just showing the barebones essentials of how us krotty barbarians move, with a few explanations of how and why this is mixed with techniques, a bit of rambling thrown in as is my habit. not much in the way of instruction as it's mostly a matter of practice and personalized tweaking (also with how much i ramble it'd have made the video last five hours )
Video 4, circling. I like this one as it gets you up on your toes a little more. You have to have your feet under you and remain on balance at all times in order to change direction. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QmIvtgRFoA"]Circling - YouTube[/ame]
Part V and the final video in the footwork series. For easier viewing I usually like to keep the videos below 5 minutes, but this one is slightly longer, so please stick with it. I'd still like to see some other members post videos here, and as has been said before, level of skill doesn't matter. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxPzjD-zsIs"]Footwork Part V - YouTube[/ame]
A very simple move. Rarely used in Freestyle (apparently a dead move) so I thought I'll post it here. In the vid is my wrestling coach Jon Owens, who not only used to compete but also referees on a national level. Here he shows a sneaky pin from the referee's position. Its done at super slow speed, so imagine this about 10x more dynamic. http://youtu.be/37IqNN7h3Ho
Short video on the subject of stretching. I've put it here, as it's the technique I'm demonstrating more than the stretch. Sorry for showing off at the end. No warm up though. Straight into class, set up the camera and shot the video (not recommended). [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8QgVfo03nM"]How to touch your toes - YouTube[/ame]
A nice boxing combo that covers several types of defence in one drill. It's important to roll, or duck out after that last shot, rather than moving back in a straight line with head held high. In this video is Paul, who is a member on our Facebook page. Your thoughts, good , bad or indifferent? [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hHkICn9lU8"]Catch catch, cover cover, slip slip. - YouTube[/ame]
I know we've debated using weights as part of your shadow boxing routine and that some of you hate it, but I think weights can be used effectively without the risk of injury. Here Paul is using a 3kg weight to assist with his hip drive. This is done with both the lead and rear hand, driving the lead and rear hip. If you don't have access to weights, then bungee or resistance cords can be used. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKjNk5mGT9s"]Working the hip drive - YouTube[/ame]
From 4:00 in this video I've defended a couple of shots, angled off, then followed up with a strike of my own. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxPzjD-zsIs"]Footwork Part V - YouTube[/ame] In the next video I've asked Paul to duck, or roll away after angling off in order to defend against my advance. This wasn't set up for a video shoot, but just a part of a one on one lesson and it fits a follow up discussion. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCTdrnFdT2Y"]Hit and move - YouTube[/ame]
Be nice to have some feed back, criticism or outright laughter though. It would also be nice to see the videos of others, even if just a "here's how I move forward and backward", or "this is my block to a jab". Remember this is a no flaming thread.
I'm keen on applying some of these techniques to my (our) own training as soon as we locate a new club. We relocated halfway across the country a few weeks ago and finding a suitable new club in this neck of the woods has been daunting. But its coming. Patience will pay off in droves when you get to see Belltoller block punches with his face But otherwise, there is a digestion phase, which I'm presently in.
can't comment much on the boxing stuff seeing as i know jack squat about boxing except that many things i really like doing are against the rules that said, i love the pace of the catch, cover, slip drill. i've always considered that technique is best built with and against movements that are 'heavy' instead of fast (but not outright slow).
so here's an idea to try to get more people posting: how about we decide on a technique, or type of technique, and open the thread up for videos of people doing their style's permutation of that thing? for example i did the video covering the peculiarities of karate punching as i do it. but what about punching in boxing? yes, it's technically simple as it doesn't have all the mindscrewy things that are in stuff like karate's kihon, but that doesn't mean it can't be broken down and explained. how does it differ from punching in, say, traditional muay thai or muay boran? how about the filipino martial arts, or all the different kung fu styles? we have a LOT of variety here on MAP, so if everyone posts a short clip about their system's fundamental punches, we're bound to get some pretty interesting cross-referencing going, with all the shared principles, the unique stuff, etc. so bring it, i wanna see your fist-face-y techniques. i showed you mine, now show me yours (also, doesn't even have to be an instructional or have any explanations. we can discuss all that in the thread, after all, so videos of bagwork or shadowboxing or general technique work should do).
I'd rather keep this to our own videos. We have plenty of other video discussion elsewhere. I'll drag the replies out of the woodwork. Sunday's video will be on... Knife defence! That woke you up didn't it?
I've given some short responses on the FB posts. Never had anybody go over some of your techniques but I love learning about foot work and the drills. I'm like a sponge with that stuff! :hat:
