Here are some Yaw Yan fighters on vid clips. http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=Yaw-Yan+ArDigma+Makati+Fighters&page=1&lv=0 Take a view and then give me your thoughts. I am particularly interested what people think about these from a Muay Thai point of view. Do you think these guys look sharp or does it look a bit wonky? The Philipines already produces fantastic boxers and weapons practitioners and many other arts that most people are unaware of (Dumog - Philipino wrestling) so it'd be interesting to see comments on this MA. The clips are all fighters related to this site: http://www.yaw-yan.com/
A swedish show "Rallarsving" visited Julius Villaflores and his sons, and trained with them. Techniques and sparring. Think its an okay martial art. And one of their heavybags had nailes inside Think its translated to Dance of death ore something. If anyone want to dl the episode I can PM the tracker adresse. Its season 2 episode 9. Ofcourse, they speak english with other people Rallarsving is about two swedish guys traveling around the world training different martial arts. And of course, meeting the pros. One of them is a thaiboxer and the other a shootfigheter. You get a bit of everyting if you watch the series on a regular.
They seemed to have good kicking ability. Not much boxing in there but i dont really know much about the art. Whats with the camera man though!!! He made it sound like a porn shoot!!! "oh yeah! jab, jab, oh yeah!!
Pretty much exactly what I thought. Would be interested to see how much of that spinning they do when they fight.
And on top of his comments I can distinctly hear the song "Im too sexy..." playing in the background of one of those clips! EDIT: Now I've heard M People's "Move it on up" in another! lol. These clips must be from the 90's or else they really need to update their CD collection! Anyway its kinda difficult to judge anything from these clips, I mean the kicking is certainly not bad but one of those extreme martial arts fellows could put on an equally if not more impressive show, doesn't necessarily mean its useful outside of demonstrations. Though from the website it looks like they compete so it would be nice to see how the style looks in action, interesting videos anyhow! ... and slip for my 2 cents some of the techniques seem a bit wonky to me but thats probably because I cant help comparing it to MT technique and its not supposed to be MT.
Hir sirs, the yaw-yan martial art is pretty much new compared to muay thai. the art have just started in 1972. it's based on kali/arnis/escrima and then translated into empty-handed techniques. basically, it looks a bit something like muay thai, tkd, and sanshou.... that is also one of the reasons why the heads, instructors, and fighters of the Philippine National Muay Thai Team were mostly yawyan practitioners. they both have their similarities and differences. there are 2 recent tournaments (Nov.18 and Dec.10, 2005) uploaded in google, http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=yaw+yan... you could catch some ring action. well, for more info, there are thread discussions about yaw-yan in the fma forum. or you could also checkout http://www.yawyan.com (main homepage), http://www.yaw-yan.com (team yaw-yan ardigma makati), and http://www.yawyanpasay.blogspot.com (team yaw-yan pasay). i'll be more than honored to answer your questions. thanks.
Interesting. . . . it looks much more "eclectic" than Muay Thai, many of the kicks seem to be extremely Kung Fu-ish. I notice side kicks and crescent kicks, as well as hook kicks, all of which I've NEVER seen in Muay Thai. It also looks somewhat "flashy". . . alot of moving about, it actually reminds me of Jeet Kune Do. Dunno though. . . . . . .
I think the fighters look okay, but not great. I can't really see their feet, so I don't know how their footwork is. Their kicks seem good and they are all athletic. However, I don't know how practical all that spinning is, as Slindsay mentioned. Plus, they drop their guards whenever they throw a big kick! If I were fighting, I would wait to time a kick and then close distance- none of them look like they would know what to do if a hook or an uppercut caught them in the middle of a kick. It does look very JKD-ish to me too- good eye, infrazel.
Well the fights impressed me a lot, they really did use those spin techniques and use them quite well. I think they could all benefit from spending a bit of time with a boxing coach though, some of their punching seemed to be missing it's mark way to often for the first round of a fight and they dropped their hands too often for my taste. The spin techs to my mind really where very well applied in general if oversused.
Compared to Traditional Muay Thai which is like two logs walking into each other Yaw Yan looks quite jumpy and JKD-ish. Also they could help getting rid of some of those overtly fancy spinning kicks too, IMO. Where are the elbow, knees and clinch?
yeah, the whole thing the way they talk about it makes it sound like the second coming but I dont see anything spectacular. They should market a dvd or vcd of the best fighters or a knockout compilation to promote the sport and let everyone see clearly showing the top fighters what it is all about at the highest level.
I don't want to sound overly harsh about FMA (as a devoted Kali and MT practicioner) but the language and appearance of theYawyan page is... well... a little silly. The "mountain storm kick" being "a hundred times" better than a karate kick, the guy doing a split over the water... it's hokey. I don't know- maybe I'm just jaded by MT (which does, sometimes, look like two dogs walking into each other).
It sounds like you may not have seen much actual Muay Thai. I'm sure they're willing to listent to your insight. Be sure to bring your fight record with you. Where are the elbow, knees and clinch?eerrmm... it's not Muay Thai.
hi , you can find a more technical comparison between yawyan and muaythai in this thread from another forum http://www.fmaforum.org/index.php?showtopic=162. It says about the differance in the stances ,punches etc.
No I have. . . I'm just being a sarcastic ass. I know MT is alot more than just that. Lol. Well, do you advocate spinning kicks then? I sure don't. Well eerrmm... elbows and knees are effective weapons though, I wouldn't know why a system WOULDN'T include them. Peace
Thanks for the link. That STRONGLY reminds me of some styles of Chinese Martial Arts, especially my own style Choy Lee Fut. We make massive usage of the forearm like this FMA guy was talking about, also triangular footwork and various angular strikes. There's a guy at my Kung Fu school who also did FMA, and he said our styles are actually very similar. Well it seems pretty cool.
Interesting though the conversation veers toward the streets in which case thai arts have military muay thai or bare knuckle for that if you want more in the way of those tactics/footwork patterns etc or weapons of course kk. It just seems the substance of the clips are not showing the over elaborating of the writing and overhype. It also seems they implying they are superior to muay thai for the ring which if thats the case they should present their top fighters and show the clips of them in action using all the tools including knees and elbows so we can "see it" not "hear it"......or else the substance of this thread remains just grasping at straws..... Like I said I would love to see a best of...compilation of the yaw yan material as I love to watch as these styles and fighters in action.
I see it as Phillippine-ized muay Thai with other kicks added into it. Mountain storm kick? Isn't that nahkaa kanod hang or the downward roundhouse kick?
