Hey guys. I'm interested in getting into WMA in the next couple of years, more specifically I'd like to learn quarterstaff and if possible historical rapier fencing (obviously I'm willing to compromise and just go learn sport fencing if I have to). Unfortunately, Oz being a small place there are virtually no dojo advertised in the yellow pages and looking up western martial arts in google means you get martial arts for Western Australia.
Do any of you guys know anything of the WMA scene down here, or if there even is one? Any answers are appreciated.

    Looks like you're in luck:

I have no idea about the first school, though for all I know it could be excellent. The Gemeiner Academy however is the Real Deal. It's very hard to get proper instruction in La Canne Vigny, and Craig Gemeiner is probably the world's leading proponent of that system. Very, very good. Some of the Stocatta guys are well-known worldwide, notably Stephen Hand and Paul Wagner. Both are respected, published authors on swordsmanship. Never seen the chaps fence though. I know nothing about the Collegium. That being said, I've never head anyone say anything bad about any of those guys I've linked to. You'll have to go check them out for yourself, obviously. :) The only one I can definitely say is Gemeiner is a badass. I've seen him fence, I've watched his videos, and it's solid. He was scheduled to teach at last year's WMAW, but had to cancel, much to everyone's disappointment.

    Best regards,

Thanks! Looks like the stoccata guys could be a goer for me since I'll be moving back to Sydney in the next couple of years. Much appreciated :)
