Hey guys and girls, I was wondering where you lot train outside of martial arts classes or outside of the dojo. I like to practice at gme in the garden or something, which is rare because it rains a lot in England, also I don't train in a dojang, my sabonim rents out a hall so can't really go there after class. Do you guys have any other ideas of where to train/ practice? I am starting to get bored of the same old place of practicing at home. By the way I live in London. Thanks everyone!
I use my house for most of my training. I'll also occasionally book a Dance Studio during the day or use an empty studio for free at my gym after weights.
The answer depends to a large extent on what you are doing. For example, I practise at home, which has it's advantages, but is very limiting in terms of space. But practising anything with a weapon in public is a very bad idea (in this country at least.)
I'm practicing Taekwondo but there isn't much space in my house so it's quite difficult to train there.
Most of my training is done outside in my back yard/patio area. I've got a free standing kick bag, a tractor tyre with a sledge hammer, 15 metres of 2" thick rope and a few other bits so I've got no shortage of supplementary training options. For my kata, shadow sparring and what-not, again most of that is done outside too, regardless of weather. If I'm just drilling a single technique (like a basic front kick) I'll stay inside where I have a mirror. It can be a bit tiresome being in the same environment, but I prefer the comfort of familiar surroundings and a lack of people staring/interfering with my training to somewhere like the local park and be interrupted all the time.
I've got my own mats and a large stair. If we're training with a few of us Meadowbank Stadium accommodates us very well
Got a matted area in my garage (about 3x3 metres), 6 foot bag, squat stands and bench. So I do my weights and bag-work in there. Also got some green mats to do BJJ on with my daughter that go in the conservatory or garden depending on weather. I have, from time to time, done body weight stuff in my local playground and sprints on the footy pitches. Jogging is done round the local woods.
I train weights and conditioning in the garage . I have a decent gym set up in there with a power cage, weights and a small matted area. I also do some technique work in there - shadow boxing type stuff and use the heavy bag occasionally. I skip on the front driveway, run on the roads or in the back garden and, when the weather is OK, may do some technique work in the garden. I also do things like loaded carries in the garden.
I have a studio with bags ect that is mostly always not in use when I am off shift at my local gym, I also have a park leading to a large Moore where i run and train and have a makeshift punching post on a large tree out of the way. If at home normally find a room vacant for my Tabata/MA. I have been meaning to convert my garage into a training area just have not had the time.
Here is where I train outside of class. Got some mats coming within the week. Looking to give it a lick of paint, get some posters up, etc. Need a few more bits of equipment in there but it serves its purpose currently for the stuff I need to do at home. Running is normally done on the local field or just around the area in general. I mix up the route so I don't get bored.
The garage, the family room got alot of use untill my wife and I got a little to real. Concussion's really.suck. I did a kata in a star well one time. So I guess any where I Feel the need to practice something.
We got moved along from the park by the coppers, so now we train (kali/FMA) in an industrial estate car park. The height of sophistication. Edit: also I definitely have shed envy!
At home I do some small exercises (push ups, kettlebell, crunches etc.) and jump rope I also like to wander outside at night time. It's great, dark, SILENT, nobody is around.. Sometimes I go to jog, sometimes I shadowbox at the forest, sometimes I do explosive jumps on the rocks etc. And I do pullups and other things like it if I find these small parks
This thread will give you some ideas for training at home, in a park, or in a confined space. Definitely worth looking though the entire thread.
