It's all about context for me. Nothing tastes like a pint of Guinness in Ireland, or a glass of Shiraz in Spain. A pint of bitter in a pub garden on a sunny day, the sound of leather on willow in the background, G&T in the sun on the lawn, a single malt by a roaring fire...

All of the above taste nicer than an orange juice in the right context, but orange juice tastes nicer with an espresso and danish pastry in the morning.

    Orange juice?
Oh go on then, stick a vodka in there!

Pretty much exclusively vodka orange. Or a 'screwdriver' if you want to sound like an absolute tool at the bar. Add an Archers and you have something delicious. Although recently I've moved onto wine and a little bit of Rekorderlig cider. Don't like any form of fizz in my drinks so knocks out most options.

I don't have a favorite really... I also drink much less frequently than I used to.
That said, I tend to like:
    - Sipping rums (can be similar to scotch at the initial taste, with a sweeter aftertaste). By this I mean higher quality rums that are intended for sipping, not mixing.
    - Whiskey (scotch, rye, whatever)
    - Mixed drinks with strong tastes of liquor.

Oh I should note that I can't stand bitters. Any drink with bitters in it is almost certain to be intolerable to me.

Because it's a more divine manner of consuming a vegan diet. :D

Try it with champagne. You might have to experiment to pair the right champagne with your particular OJ (or vice versa) but once you get it -- it's sooooo good. :D

If I drink too much in too short a period of time, I get those symptoms. I used to do that when I was in college. I disliked the symptoms but liked the lead-up.

What is the lead-up? Well, if I drink more moderately instead of trying to go from 0 to falling down drunk in 40 minutes, I find myself:
    - Having more desire to interact socially. I'm quite introverted and generally dislike most social interaction; a small to moderate amount of alcohol flips me into a more socially interactive/chatty mode.
    - Feeling more relaxed/the 'buzz' effect.

There is some line and when I cross it I go from relaxed & social to either sick & dizzy or to loud & obstinate (not violent, thankfully). If the latter, I generally end up sick & dizzy later as once I get to loud & obstinate I tend to keep drinking.
I think I recall perhaps 3 times in the past 10 years where I got past the 'mild buzz/more chatty' phase. I prefer not to pass that phase--everything after it sucks pretty hard.

Tequila. I like a good sipping tequila on its own, and the margarita is the king of mixed drinks. When it comes to beer, although Oregon has a ton of good microbrews (Deschutes Brewery being my favorite microbrewery), you can't go wrong with a simple old Corona and lime.

In case it's not obvious, my approach to drinking is not so much "getting hammered with the boys at the pub and getting into a fight or two," and more along the lines of Zac Brown Band's "Knee Deep":

Oh I forgot to talk about beer...
I find most beer ranges from mildly unpleasant to mildly pleasant for me.
Wheat beers and some brown ales (not too crazy, Guinness is going way too far for my taste) I find to be pretty tasty. E.g., I really like Newcastle brown ale.
    I can't stand IPAs though.

Guiness is great except when the weather is hot (it's too thick for hot weather), but I 100% agree with these other two statements. I have never tried an IPA that was good. (shrug)

IPAs are an acquired taste that I never acquired. I don't understand people's obsession with beers so massively hoppy that they taste like licking the underside of a lawnmower. I'd say the same of incredibly dark, bitter beers like imperial stouts and the like; you shouldn't have to prove your toughness by muscling through a beer. It's supposed to be relaxing! With a Corona and lime, someone who has never had a beer before will sip it and say "hey, that tastes good." It's not pretentious, but it's pleasant, and hey, isn't that what you want after a hard week?

Rather partial to a good IPA...and yes I do like it solidly hoppy

I brewed some once with caramel grain offset that was, if I am being modest, parping spectacular!!!

A cold Guinness on a hot day is lovely!

Lawnmowers aren't bitter enough. IPA is my default drink. Some good ones coming out of the US too, Shipyard and Cruiser spring to mind. I do find a lot of stouts and porters a bit of a chore though.

Tangent: after posting my last two posts in this thread on my PC, I now have Corona ads throughout my Facebook newsfeed on my phone. Yeah, 21st-century living isn't remotely creepy...

Have you tried this one? America's best beers are brewed in central Oregon. Fresh Squeezed IPA - Craft IPA by Deschutes Brewery

I don't know, man. I expect we have different definitions of "hot day." When I visited England one summer I remember everyone freaking out because, oh no, it was 28 C one weekend. I was all " " because that's the 4 am low temptation over here in the summer. For real, today the official low was 28, and the high temperature was 40 C. [pause to reflect on that] I find that Smithwick, which is a similar Irish beer, goes down better in the summer.

Hefeweizens, though, are good any day. :)

Is that a style of beer, or a brand name? I haven't heard of it. (That's a catchy name, for a martial arts person to drink. :D )
