Ok folks, BuddhaPalm clearly has some issues but he's not the only one dropping personal insults! Report post function is your friend. And BuddhaPalm due to the sheer amount of insults I'm automatically going to supply a 3 day ban- if you return then remember personal insults/inappropriate comments are not acceptable (for your own social well being as well as for upholding the sites ToS).

    Agreed.

Bruce, did we answer your questions?

I think most the relevant information is in these posts:

Anytime. Just some of my favorites and a few I pick the brains of from time to time. I did forget one more good site:

    http://www.elitefts.com/

I especially like Jim Wendler on this site.

You know, he still didn't answer the question of why MAists training for fitness should do it any differently from any other 'sport'....

Anyway, hopefully the OP now knows what NOT to do ;-)

I stick to my original advice, learn the olympic and power lifts if you have the coaching available. If not you can still 'learn yourself' basic things like:

    Bench
    Front/Back Squat
    OH Press
    Deadlift

I was interested that Kuma put farmer's walks in his beginners programme, it's an awesome exercise that's consistantly overlooked.

I've competed in a few amateur strongman competitions so you learn pretty quick that a strong grip is very important in everything you do. Farmer's walks are a terrific exercise in my opinion. They're not only working the grip but your entire back, shoulders, hips, and legs get more than a tickle during it as well.

    Farmer's walks are horrible!
Agreed they are great for you.

Question: do you guys just use a DB or have you got some technique od making the handle as wide as possible?

i was thinking about using towels and seing if it made any diff.

I started off using DBs and I think DBs are still a bit harder than using the actual farmer's walks implements, though those definitely let you use a lot more weight. You can also use military duffel bags which have the handles on the sides, or a regular sandbag and just grab the top.

My first gym actually had two sets of triceps bars, so I would load both of them up and grab one end making the top and go for a walk that way.

We don't have those bars, only EZ and oly, but that is a great idea.

In my gym when the DBs get ovet 32kg the handles start getting really wide so its pretty hard work. The gym i do my power stuff at has all the handles exactly the same to "not toy with muscle memory when going up or down weights" which means i can farmers walk alot more than normal but i dont 'feel it' as much.
    Hence the towels question.

Forgot to address that. I think it's a great idea. A friend of mine is a Judoka and he loves doing traditional gym movements with towels. Pull-ups especially. He says it really helps his gripping. Have only done towel pull-ups myself, but I can say that adding a towel definitely ups the Suck-Meter.

Haven't read this whole thread, but must say that Starting Strength (google) is a really simple, solid programme to get you started. There are a few intermediate/advanced programmes you can go on to, but can't go wrong with SS as it hammers the compounds.
