Kano-Shihan did believe that serious students should pick up some koryu as well. The combination remains common in Japan. In the west there are many practitioners of 'traditional' MA who scoff at judo and the like (which is especially funny when the 'traditional' art in question is some modern mix like Jitsu foundation) but there are soke of ryu-ha who clearly don't share that view.
