Someone who does karate is called a karateka. Someone who does judo is called a judoka. Someone who does boxing is called a boxer. Someone who does savate is called a savateur. Someone who does capoeira is called a capoeirista. Is there a word that means "someone who does taekwondo"?
I believe jeja means "student". The generic term for TKDists is, I think, Taekwondoin. Or, "You up there, can you please stop spinning, land, and talk to me?" Mitch
The proper word is "Taekwondoin", with "in" meaning student or practitioner of _____. In Korean, "In" has roughly the same meaning as "Ka" in Japanese. Hence, Karate practitioner = Karateka, Taekwondo practitioner = Taekwondoin. It also works for most of the other Korean martial arts - Hapkidoin, Hwarangdoin, Tang Soo Doin, etc.
Thanks for asking this Mitlov! I know books written in English (even those written by Koreans) use the -ist ending. But that appears to be a Korean-English hybrid. The -in ending seems more appropriate. Learned something new!
No, it goes wth the o to make an oin sound, like in coin. There's actually a silent "g" on the end too. You know those consecutive 360's people do? TaeKwondoing doing, doing, doing! Mitch
That's too bad, I was hoping it was pronounced like doin', as in "Hao Yuu Doin," a practitioner of the New England art of calzone-eating and racketeering. In all seriousness, where is the emphasis? Is it taeKWONdoin or taekwonDOIN?
