When the romans invaded great britain everyone spoke what is essentially Welsh. The romans didnt succeed in stopping the britons speaking welsh in what is now wales....but elsewhere in 'england' the language began to change.

Romans left...welsh got on with their lives.

Then the Angles from GERMANY
and the Saxons from GERMANY.....came and stayed in england.

then others came..and so on...

So, basically the original britons became the welsh...and the german-german-roman-norman------people in england became the english.
