What are some of the ways in which we lose chi?
We lose chi when we are too emotional, use our mind too much, label people and things and are too rigid in our thinking, or abuse our body. We are too emotional when we are too happy, too sad. too angry or too afraid. We use our mind too much when we talk too much, are too stubborn, are too narrow minded, are too judgmental or are prejudiced. When we label people and things and are too rigid in our thinking, we become too excessive in our life, thus losing chi. We can see this when we are too devoted to a job, a religion, or our family or we pay too much attention to political issues. We lose chi by abusing our body when we eat too much, smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol, sleep too much or too little, drink coffee, work too much on the computer or the Internet, encounter pollution or electro-magnetic fields.

We lose chi when we overanalyse something that nobody can agree on in the first place.

oh come on. according to that list you are losing chi pretty much all day. unless you are a hermit who lives in a cave somewhere and has no emotions (or nasty electricity stuff nearby)

we lose chi when we believe in a chinese superstition with no evidence whatsoever supporting it.

I don't really believe it is possible to lose chi because chi does not mean something concrete like water, blood or lemon juice.

The main reason is this one:

Loss of jing (essence/semen). This is an ancient teaching that has been around for thousands of years. And not necessarily Daoist. Buddhists also refer to it.

    TCM/Daoist approach to jing maintenance:

Another interesting article which also cover different allied topics:

It's impossible to achieve higher states of IMA training, internal alchemy (jing-qi-shen) and Enlightenment (depending of what your goal is) if jing is depleted.

Tradition says that to open microcosmic orbit (xiao zhou tian) if absolute celibacy is not followed for at least 100 days. I tried it and YES, it's true. Not only micro-orbit but also Kundalini.

Read this thread to get some info on the subject of preserving jing:

In addition this exercise will help to prevent seminal nocturnal emisions:

    1. Stand about shoulder width apart. 8 inches apart at the toes and 2 inches apart at the heels. keeping your arms at the sides.

    2. Gently raise (the slower the better) your arms at the side to the shoulder level and gently raise on your toes. focus is on the finger tips. push with strength at the toes. slightly open your mouth and tuck in your tummy.

    3. Then gently lower your arms and toes back. Close your mouth

    4. The posture is like a bird flying, flapping the wings gently. Similar to "White Crane Qigong".

Do it for about 10 times before you go to bed.

    From Chinese source (http://www.jiexieyin.org/ShowArticle.asp?ArticleID=852)

Anyway if you practice daily microcosmic orbit meditation then jing will be transformed into Qi. I can say the truth of this statement because it happens to me. It's very important to follow Daoist techniques (more practical than Buddhist approach).

However, the hardest part is dealing with society and the monster that is constantly bombarding upon individuals: Pornography. The worse is the subliminal one that pushes humans to follow the path of waste. And if you are a true martial artist conserving jing is a must. Celibacy will be a plus, but this is not a realistic path for most of you. Therefore practice ejaculation control techniques with your partner:

Mantak Chia has also published a book on the topic which you might be interested of purchasing:

There is nothing wrong with some good porno. I watch it with girls too. I don't know that much about taoism and buddhism, but to me pornography does not really seem like the worst horror there is.

the jing thing is certainly true in my experience.

If you've been at it a few times and the next day you're training in some way, you certainly notice the difference!

I think the word you're looking for is not 'jing' but 'jizz'

Studies have shown that the only time sex impairs athletic performance is when you lose sleep because of it, otherwise it has been shown that sportsmen and women often perform better if they've had recent sex as they tend to be less frustrated, more relaxed, and sometimes still on the endorphin high.

But hey, since when did we let facts get in the way of philosophy?

supposedly we're not 'thinking outside the box' if we accept mere scientific research and reliable studies as fact

Professional footballers are told not to have sex for two or three days (can't remember which) before a match. I don't know if it's the same with other sports.
