Greetings all-- I've been following my website through google analytics and it seems we rarely get visitors. I was at first using blogger to host the website. I bought the domain and everything. I found that our page wasn't showing up until after page 15/16 with searches on 'karate washington dc', 'washington dc karate'. It never showed up for martial arts. I've recently moved it to google sites, and it's beginning to show up anywhere from page 2-5. It varies. Does anyone have any pointers? The site is www.dcwado.com. I wouldn't mind any functionality points or usability pointers. Thanks in advance.
Hi dcwado, I am currently using my iPad instead of my Pc but I can certainly give you a few quick wins. 1) Host on a proper hosting environment not on google 2) you home page content needs a lot of work, ensure the words you want to rank from are used throughout your content, page title, page description, H1 and in the content. 3) get the site linked from their sources 4) Visit site beam.net and get a free account and scan your site, it will provide you with a ton of feedback. I'm not sure how familiar you are with HTML, CSS and Javascript. But if you want a successful sit I'd recommend at least getting to grips with the basics. Looking at the source code of your first page, it very complicated for what in the end turns out to be a very simple layout. If this is a result of using Google sites then I'd certainly recommend getting a proper hosting service. Just for comparison here is the code wget downloaded from your site for me in contrast to a site I was building a few years back. I don't pretend to be a master designer. But it got good rankings for it's target market. One of the things I noticed about your metatags is there is no "keywords" tag and no "robots" tag. At least I didn't see them. I also didn't see a "revisit" tag which is related to the "robots" tag. These are important for indexing services like search engines for example. Getting good search engine rankings is all about optimising your content. Google are on a "useful" websites kick. So your page needs to appear useful in terms of it's content. Do not however try to cheat Google. They will black list your site and drop it from listings. They've done this to companies as big as BMW who tried to game the search engine by placing white text on a white page. Each page on your site needs to be heavily focused on the subject matter of that page and clearly relate back to the main site. Obviously wording is everything here since that's what the web spiders see. Nothing but code and text. So really think long and hard about your "keywords". Not just for the site overall. But for each individual page. If you add images then be sure to fill in all the description tags properly. If you have links, then fill in the title tags. I've also found it helps to use a seperate hosting service for videos and images. The reason being by linking to them you can divert traffic from popular services like YouTube to your site. There's more chance of someone stumbling across your site on YouTube than there is of them stumbling across it on a search engine. Opening accounts for your club on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Google+ etc also really helps to build a presence on the web. Use social media to disseminate public information about the club and it's activities. Personally I'd also get your training info front and centre on that first page with a link to the map and your contact details. Everything else is bedtime reading.
