Oh dear. I think we can pretty much discount any pattern application demo that shows someone blocking two different techniques from two different people AT THE SAME TIME! Just won't ever happen. And as such it rather casts doubt on how much such people know about actual violence and how to counter it (and I don't care what dan grade they hold). That's just not acceptable in this day and age where the knowledge about applying double techniques against 1 person is relatively easy to find.
Again imo good points but like SW it is not fully understood and or taken out of context. I think that it is fairly common among many that they emphasis on sports sparring in the WTF has weakened Kukki TKD's reputation for SD. The same can be said about the ITF's emphasis on the Tuls weakening Chang Hon TKD's reputation for SD. However one must realize that all traditional MAs have their own emphasis. They try to offer more than just SD. When they do, this of course naturally will weaken their SD capabilites. I joined original TK-D for SD & I think it has helped me greatly in that area. Of course we trained it as a MMA, which it was developed as, but still our SD skills are still limited by the emphasis we purposely place on the other aspects of our tradtional KMA. That does not worry me in the least, as I am made better by many of the other benefits of training in a tradtitional MA. At the same time I am happy with my SD skills & know they can be better if that was my sole concentration. But I use TKD every day of my life & rarely ever use it for SD. So for me, my emphasis is in the right place, which of course is only personal to or for me. That being said, the ITF Tuls were Gen Choi's signature. They are what helps him set off his KMA of SD from the others. It is the "Art" of the MA. They are given for their beauty. While they have fundamental movements strung together in a sequence, I am not sure that they should be interpeted as actual combat drills. This to me is a big problem. Now to see some good examples of fighting patterns, go to Alex Gillis' website: www.akillingart.com There you will see ones developed by Gen Lim & GM CK Choi, pioneers of original TKD. You will find videos of them under his blog section
nice 1 I dont know these style of patterns as iv only practised wtf poomse , but i really like to see them done well from any art, I love the delayed sections in this team poomse, whats your thoughts madhoose? http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPMH54bDLbg
Just to point out that this video contained segments of several of the ITF Chang Hon ChonJi forms, not a complete one, but the timing & movement sequences were visually creative & nice to watch, exactly what Gen Choi wanted in his patterns, to be visually pleasing to the eye
very true, in the past I have practised patterns blindly without asking questions on the usefulness of certain moves, ive certainly a long way to go to acheive fluid power but I think veiwing forms done extremley well can only inspire. im currently doing(learning) 1st kup (paljang) and 1st dan (koryo) but the higher forms are a deffinate insight into the desired skill required. few vids im studying if its of intrest, the second being what I consider to be a great training aid as a walkthrough on the BB form [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5HrEOykyik"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5HrEOykyik[/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qSY0JeWdCg"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qSY0JeWdCg[/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5HrEOykyik"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5HrEOykyik[/ame]
oops, forgot to add the link. possibly the worst tkd pattern videos ever, claims to be a 5th dan as well :L http://mastermike.com/category/forms/
It's not my idea of a good pattern either, but to be fair it's not difficult to find bad pattern vids As per the original post I'd really like it if you could post an example of a good pattern or one that is interesting for some reason Mullintkd, I'm trying to hold up examples of good stuff here, not just facepalm at the bad. Post up a link to one you really like, or one that illustrates a particular point about patterns Mitch
Can't comment on the technicalities, but I love the calm precision (and insane hip flexors) that Arek Homańczuk brings to this pattern: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLTrHd5Wgjk"]Moon-Moo Tul - Arek HomaÅ„czuk - YouTube[/ame]
There's some incredible leg control in evidence there! Posted by MAP's own Gizmo too I think; wonder why the guy's wearing a TAGB dobok? Mitch
i love this Moon Moo by Joel Denis [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FauV5oQ2yuM"]Moon Moo - YouTube[/ame]
