Okay.. I have started this thread to go hand in hand with the current discussion of what a Black belt in TKD means.

So please, I ask all of you to post Dan grading videos, whether of your own school or any you have seen on YouTube.. for comparisom.

I have filmed all my BB gradings (not mine, my students), simply to show what we do, so will kick off the thread (in my next post) with one from 2006 (featuring the movie star Dev Patel - who was 15 at the time) and my clubs most recent one (as the criteria has changed a bit since the 2006 grading ie. its been more defined, as opposed to changed I guess).

I don't have any video of my gradings, but I'll look out for some others.

I was going through my patterns the other day, trying to do them properly for the first time in almost a year since my knee injury occurred. Obviously they were terrible! I also realised how weak my knee has become. :(

I did think that it might be interesting to video them though, for my own reference and to see what needs fixing first. If I get round to it I might post them for the amusement of my fellow MAPpers :D

I can upload some sections of some of one of our gradings. I don't have the time nor inclination to do an edit, so what is on the DVD is what I will upload. To start with; ~12 rounds of sparring. So with minimal editing (the 30 second breaks are gone) the vid is [23:14] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9K5-cyU0kJ0"]Grading Sparring - YouTube[/ame]

Anything specific you're looking for? I could up some forms or SD or breaking.

I would say that our gradings are much like yours Mr Anslow. The only main difference is that we do not generally do every pattern up to our grade and merely the ones for our grade and then 2 of the examiners choice.

Our association had it's mastery test the first week of May this year. We tested five days and four nights out in the field with very little sleep or food in a format very similar to "hell week" at BUDS for the US Navy SEALS. At the end of the exam, there is a public show for friends, family, ect. We were not allowed to video any of the actual testing, but friends and family of testers did and uploaded portions of the show/demos to youtube.

Our systems traditional roots are TKD and we use it's terms and customs, but our curriculum now includes TKD, Muay Thai, BJJ/Submission Grappling, MMA Ground Striking, FMA Stick and Knife Work, CDT Gun Disarms, Boxing and Okinawan Kobudo. Here is a quick demo of some of my students from our school's Black Belt Graduation show last year just giving samples of our curriculum in a demo

On the mastery test show, please keep in mind that the testers have been going around the clock for 5 days and 4 nights. We have aleady done the VAST majority of our actual testing and this part is the rehearsed, sanitized show for the public. Testers are going for 4th-7th dan and my instructors, KJN Ernie Reyes, Sr. and KJN Tony Thompson are testing for their 8th dans.
This video is one of the highlight videos of TKD forms with George Caulderon (7th dan candidate) performing the TKD form Koryo.

We also were tasked with creating our own forms. Here George Fuji (testing for 7th) and his son (testing for 4th) do a two man BJJ ehxibition and my own student, Allen Clark (testing for 5th) doing an XMA sword form.

This is some free style ground fighting demonstrating ground strking and grappling. This part is NOT choreographed. We are not trying to cause injury, but just having fun and going at it in the show. Both earlier in the week and after the show was over, we were doing this for real as part of our test.

Thats ashame.. as cool as these videos are (and theres some great stuff in there), they are not really grading videos, but demo's and I`d really of liked 9loved in fact) to of seen 'hell week'.

Can you perhaps describe what you/others did during the five days?

And is this for anyone going for a BB, irrespective of age etc.

    cheers,

    Stuart

    Cool. Good to hear.
Only those going for 1st degree do all the patterns 7 saju. Those going for 2nd Dan do all the 1st degree tul, plus 3 Kup tuls of the examiners choice + the other stuff required.

Heres a 2nd Dan grading video:

First of all.. good luck with the grading.

Secondly, a video of it, posted here would be great.

You know, I started filming my gradings the day I got my first students to BB because my old org filmed them (and even say on their web site.. we film all gradings for prosperity).. but never ever gave anyone a copy of the film! So, 6 months later, after the grading , I make a DVD of it for my students (those that took it, not everyone), so they can actually see what they went through.

It was only later I put them online to promote the club a bit.

    Stuart,
This was actually a "kinder and more gentle" version of our mastery test this time. I feel that my instructors have realized that some of the things we have done in the past was a bit overboard. We were tested on all the material/curriculum that you see in the videos and quite a bit more (I just posted that which was up on youtube from the show). We were tested on our curriculum for submission grappling and we free rolled, the difference was that they had us do it for 1 1/2 hours straight in the sand on Santa Cruz beach. We have a technical curriculum for MMA ground striking and we were tested on that and we were tested on sparring using the same.

Along the same lines of technical drills and sparring for our boxing, kickboxing and full MMA. We fought multiple opponents, did adrenal self defense (RBSD) scenarios with a local PD's SWAT team in the manner that they train their officers. We spent way more time up in trees for someone like myself who is afraid of heights would like. We did our stick and knife curriculum from the FMA's plus "sparred" with the shock knives and the padded sticks.

This mastery as I said was not as "over the top" because we did get more sleep and more food and the conditions were not as rough this time. Past mastery tests have included everything from sweat lodges to 18,000 ft. tandem jumps, to being tear gassed to fire walks to team work drills wiht lifting huge logs on the beach to white water rafting (and being told to jump out in level 5 rapids). We have worked with Marine foreced recon, the Navy SEALS and SWAT Teams going through a ;ot of the training exercises thy put their iwn people through. It has been a bit crazy at times and I think my instructors have realized that and still want t make it alife changing experience, but it was nice to get another stripe on my belt and not need surgery afterwards.
